I wasn't "pig hunting," per se, but dang if one didn't present itself to me.

I was hoping for a doe and had watched 10 of them in the last hour of the hunt. Unfortunately, my confidence level was not up for the distance the deer were from my blind. It's been a horrible season, but I digress.

So, the does are finally out of sight and I figure it's about time to climb down from the blind and go pick up Father. I'm gathering my stuffs and as I turn and glance out the windoor, I notice a dark spot in the corn. It wasn't there earlier. I grab my Vortex 10x monocular, peek out at the blob, and I'll be if the blob ain't a pig.

I set my butt down, pick up my Ruger American in 300blk, loaded with some fancy red tipped Hornady ammo, and commence to sending one through its head. DRT.

I don't know, maybe 100 to 120lbs boar.

Congratulations on your pig kill. I have killed plenty of deer scense I was a teenager but never a hog. Its on my to do list. They are not where I hunt yet.
 
Marinate those straps in the cheapest plum brandy you can find and throw them on the charcoal!
No question they’ll be fitting to eat!

Are the boars that much different from the sows? We took a sow that presented herself while hunting deer, and she was better than store bought pork. Leaner with more 'bacon flavor'.

In my experience, no. But people keep telling me boars aren't fit to eat and I'm not sure where that's coming from.

The guy that was processing ours at a cost of half the meat said if a boar ain't good, it's because someone didn't know what they were doing with the butchering.

I have a friend that hog hunts just about year round. He's killed dozens upon dozens of pigs. He decides which ones he keeps to eat by their smell when he walks up to them. I've heard the smells described as sweet, like brown sugar (good), and pissing on a campfire (not good). If they smell "not good," he leaves them for the scavengers.

ETA: And when in doubt, sausage.

That's good to know, it'd suck to butcher a pig wretching the whole time, then find out it's only good for coyote bait.
 
I know my old timers would cut the nuts off of the boars weeks prior to slaughter.
 
When I was young. My father would put Wine Malt (the leftover thingy at the bottom of homemade wine/ most of the time it's rice/fruits.)

Leave them out in back. Wake up with a grown boars knocked out snoring in the woods

You see. There's always an easy way. ;)
 
BBQ ed wild boar is amazing. Keep them under 140 pounds and your good to go. Any thing over and the tastes goes south.
 
That Heli Hunter show used to kill the hell out of pigs all over Texas. The started out trying to give the meat to people in need. That quickly turned into giving the meat to a little company down there that made dog food. I spent a bunch of money on my hunt, processing, travel, etc. Gave the meat away to guy who had a bunch of hunting dogs. I did get some nice tusks out of it however.
