Pillar bedding

I have a savage axis that will be getting a Boyd's stock soon. I want to pillar and glass bed it. I bought a bed rock kit but I'm not sure about the pillars. How do I tell how long they need to be? Does it matter if they are steel or aluminum? Thanks
