It didn't take long for the (normally) gun-ignorant MSM to jump on pistol braces and AR pistols as the next great evil. If you're going to buy/build an AR pistol, you should probably do it soon.

Why? The brace doesn't make it a pistol. If they do go the way of the bump-stock I'll probably just spend the $200 and go SBR. Not sure the SBR route is worth the extra constraints on travel, etc.

New Legislation Outlawing Violent Gun-Wielding Groups Accidentally Bans Federal Government
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Well, this is embarrassing: Congress accidentally just banned the federal government.
The major faux pas came during a push for more legislation against guns and the deranged people who wield them to commit acts of terror. After some bipartisan bickering and tacking billions of dollars of pork onto the proposed legislation, lawmakers virtuously passed a bill that outlaws violent gun-wielding groups.

Though the legislation was intended to target fringe groups that use firearms to commit acts of violence, such as gangs, far-right nationalist groups, and terrorists, it was worded too vaguely and accidentally banned the entire federal government. The law specifically named "groups that use violence and wield guns to steal money and property, threaten people, and kill innocent civilians in a callous, egregious manner." Instantly, the federal government became an outlaw.

"We just meant, like, regular, on-the-street criminals," said one congressman sheepishly. "Not, like, official, elected criminals."

Congress appealed to the courts and thankfully, a judge who was chosen by the federal government and whose paycheck comes from the federal government ruled that the federal government was exempt from the law.

"That was a close one," said one politician. "Next time we'll be more careful to specify which types of violence are OK."

Nah...I like mine.

Believe I’ll opt out.
Think I might buy one. If the day comes that I absolutely feel the need to carry that level of concealable firepower, the risks of getting caught with an “illegal” SBR will be minor comparatively speaking.

Does anyone find it strange that each of these shooters seems to be using some less-than-common “fringe” device: bump stock, pistol brace, etc. It’s almost as if there is some sinister force trying to shine light on the scary dark corners of the gun community.

Who used a bump stock?

How long before someone screws up with a Mossberg Shockwave or Remington TAC and get those on the radar?

How far/often do you travel?

The travel paperwork really shouldn’t be an excuse for not going the SBR route. Use any of the other reasons, but this one is overused.

I spend two minutes, once a year, to do my paperwork. Once that’s approved (often within 2-3 weeks), I have 11 firearms I can travel with, to any of 10 other states, for an entire calendar year...without any advance notice required.

I submitted mine 8/1/19 for all of 2020.

I sincerely believe, if the Commies (DEMS) get the house, senate and the Presidency, we will finally see a push from them the likes we have never seen before.
And likely a push back, like we've never seen before.

The often argument I hear is that a pistol you can conceal in your vehicle with a CCW permit legally. The SBR is not legal to be concealed. That is why a lot of folks like the “pistol” concept better.

I thought the ATF report never listed it as being used.

There was a sprinkling of sarcasm in my post. As far as I remembered, no one had used one in a mass shooting.

But, if it was found at the scene, it's gotta go.

No, what has got to go are the people behind this kind of crap. They will not stop. They will keep trying to push that line farther and farther back. Like any other criminal thug, they’re the ones that made the choice.

Ya’ll are silly, braces will never be banned because it is not within ATF’s legislative authority to ban them. This is different than bump stocks where they argue that installing one on makes a machine gun, and you aren’t allowed to make a machine gun or possess a machine gun part under existing legislation.

What they might do is change their mind again and decide that they are designed to be shouldered, making the guns with them SBR’s rather than pistols. In any litigation they’d have to explain their reasoning, and I’d bet that they’d rather not do that, especially in a southern or rural state.

Of course the legislature could do whatever they want.

Wait. So bump stocks are actually banned? Like, banned banned?

I have assumed so, but I haven’t looked. Never owned one.

They might also change their mind and say that braces are actually stocks and require a pistol so equipped to be registered as an SBR, whether or not it is shouldered.
