A lot of you guys carry flashlights. Why? I can imagine a few uses, but my iPhone has a little flashlight if I need it. Curious.
If need be, I can't clip my phone to the bill of my hat..

Of the stuff I carry in my pocket the flashlight is used almost as often as the knife. If not more so.

In my experience, the flashlight on my phone is difficult to hold compared to a stand alone flashlight. So for something the size of a pen or smaller the trade off is pretty easy. Also, I can pop my flashlight in my mouth if I need both hands. Not to mention the beam is far far stronger.

I still use my phone flashlight at times, but only when I donā€™t have my pocket flashlight.

Oh...and for me at least:

Flashlight activation: remove from pocket, push button on/off

Phone flashlight activation: remove phone from pocket, try to get flip up menu to work, press flashlight button, try to reposition phone in hand to aim, fumble phone, try to slide menu back up, fumble again, turn light off.

To me, the phone flashlight is like using a show as shoe with a reinforced heel as a hammer. Yeah...it works...kinda.

Okay...here's today's pocket. Smith 342, Wallett from Curt, car key, and my post-LASIK eye drops. I'll be toting those around for a week. Probably won't pocket carry gun tomorrow

I try not to have anything in my pockets except wallet, key, maybe cell phone and occasionally a speed strip loaded with .38.

Funny you should mention that...I have a little LED lamp that clips to the brim of a baseball cap. Use it when I'm out in the swamp or road cruising for snakes. Keeps my hands free for flipping debris, etc.

Flashlight battery could last longer in an emergency. Why waste phone power?

Flashlight bezel might break glass, or skin if need be.

Flashlight is a better flashlight. Brighter and wider beam if need be.

Try holding and aiming a phone light beam in a defensive or possibly room clearing/checking situation.

I started carrying multiple flashlights while traveling after getting stranded during the Atlanta snow/ice storm a few years ago. When the power goes out for a length of time you realize the value of a dedicated light. I didn't want to burn phone power checking out the hotel or taking a pee.

Flashlights have gotten smaller, cheaper and brighter. Why not have one?

I have A LOT of flash lights. Probably dozens of LED flashlights. Again, mostly for late night hiking, reptile searching type (nerd) activities. For me, it's just not something that I want to carry in my pocket every day. My pockets already feel overloaded with wallet on one side and phone on the other. Of course, I understand that others have different needs, dress differently, etc. I get it.

Good point. I have a Streamlight micro-light for my pocket. So-so usefulness. I usually have a flashlight in the car and 1-2 in a a backpack nearby. My backpack is always in my car, hotel, office or bedroom.

For me, it is used often... Day and night. Much easier to use than a phone light too.

First, do you know Stan up in WS? If not PM me, I need to get you in touch with the guy, I think you'd get along great with the reptile stuff.

Secondly - Since starting to carry a dedicated light again I realized how many times I need it. It IS more difficult to use than the phone light, quicker to deploy and brighter, But also I seem to use it quite a bit under desks, behind cabinets etc quite regularly.
And, like others said, saving power on your power is a good choice too.

With the size of these lights, like the microstream above, it really doesnt add much weight or space to the pocket.
I HATE full pockets. I dont carry a lot of stuff because I dont want bulky pockets. But with this light I find that since its clipped to the pocket on the side that I can still dig into my pocket without it affecting me and its so small that I do not notice it is there when walking around etc.

At my work we have ID badges, I clip mine next to my light so that the badge itself covers the clip - no peering eyes to question if I have a knife or not. Mostl wear khaki pants, but somethings dress slacks, sometimes jeans. It feels good in all of them.

A gun and a Streamlight are two things I have on me at all times. And, like @rantingredneck said, it gets used more than my knife.

Here is a flashlight story. And it's true.....

So I'm gluten intolerant. And yesterday at breakfast I got glutened. I ate some hashbrown caserole that I did not expect to contain wheat. I was wrong. I knew within about 45 minutes that I was in trouble. You see for me one of the primary symptoms of being glutened is "digestive distress." Yes I was in for a crappy day. Quite literally.

I dealt with the aftermath off and on all day. In between trips to the toilet I produced emanations that could cause divorce. It was bad.

Then yesterday evening we have the annual Christmas play at church. All four of my kids were in it, so naturally I had to go. Regardless of my circumstances at the moment.

After the play was over we did the obligatory Baptist ritual when it comes to food. As we were there eating I told my wife that I was going to need to go soon as I didn't feel like blowing up the single stall bathroom there in the hut. There would have been no denying it and it just wouldn't have been proper or pleasant. She reminded me then that Santa was still coming (or one of the deacons in a Santa suit....) and that we had to stay for that. I said, OK great, but here is my phone so you can take pictures (hers was in the car charging) I'm headed to the bathroom on the other side of the church near the pastor's office. I won't make it otherwise.

So off I go. I get to the bathroom and flip the light switch. Nothing. Complete darkness. Apparently the breakers for that side of the church weren't on because reasons.

Ah....Streamlight...... I clicked it on and did the deed by flashlight.....

Afterward I told my wife, I know this is a Baptist church but in true ecumenical spirit the pastor should call the Diocese and request an old priest and a young priest to purge the evil I left behind......

Um... Gives a whole new meaning to the thread title!! :D

Harder to put a smartphone in your mouth and aim into whatever tight, dark space you just dropped your screwdriver.

And some of us don't have phones either

My Droid has a flashlight that will activate by shaking the phone three times. Off the same way. Really slick. I use mine all the time. And one handed activation... No menus.

How does that work if youre running/jogging etc?

Well, sillyā€¦.who does that? Thats why I carry a gun. LOL. Kidding. I have had a few accidental activations, but it usually takes very firm intentional shakes to make it happen. 3 in rapid succession.

I wasnt sure if a quick three steps would set it off or what
Would hate for something like that to happen and the drain your battery without you realizing it.

Today. Same besides 5.11 flashlight and carrying the big folder. So far I'm really liking the little 5.11 flashlight. 90L but is more compact so it fits in my change pocket easy.

So they can find their phones, obviously. :D

That's like saying I carry a .25 Phoenix Raven.....why do I need to carry a real pistol?. My phone has a clock too........but I still wear watches and carry a real flash light. Maybe I am just old school.......but while its convenient for a cell phone to have these cute features, it's no substitute for a real light IMO.

That sort of circles us back around to my original question...what do you do with a "real light"? I just don't have room in my pockets for something that might be useful, or marginally better, than an iPhone light a couple times a year. But, that's just my lifestyle. Others may need a heavy duty flashlight for work or recreation.

Here's how I use my cell phone light in the last month:

1 - To locate dog poop for scooping when my dogs crap in the neighbor's yard on a night walk. Got to make sure that we collect all the nuggets.
2 - Look down the barrel of potential revolver purchases
3 - When I need a small light for a few minutes in the bedroom and my wife has already gone to sleep.
4 - Find something in the back on the gun safe.
5 - Helped a lady find a lost earring backing on a carpeted floor.

I may buy one just because I like gadgets...but have no room or inclination to carry one every day.

Everybody has their own needs to consider. I work as a consultant for a faculties/structural engineering firm so I am constantly poking around in buildings/attics/crawlspaces and other locations mostly on larger commercial/industrial buildings where having a good light is key. I do certainly use the light on my cell phone form time to time but just as a backup. Basically I like having a potent light on me cause I am just afraid of the dark;).

You do you but I carry a flashlight for power and convenience.
Hand in pocket click the switch, it's on vs the phone which takes 3 or 4 steps.
Works in wet conditions that I would not think about putting my phone into.
Works with wet/oily hands that I don't want to touch the phone with.
Can hold the flash light in my teeth (ewww germs see above)
My Galaxy S7 is bright but it doesn't have much throw.
My cheap Fenix can light up the top rack of a 30' clear warehouse. Other folks have enough light power to set fires if they aren't careful.
Also when I traveled for work I didn't want to burn phone battery on lighting.

When I started carrying a flashlight every day I had a 4sevens quark series, 2 AA. It was bright as hell but in the end I just wanted something simple that turned off and on, no strobe, moonlight, SOS, and all that other crap I never used. I then got a streamlight stylus pro, which was great. It is no where near as bright as the larger lights but I like that it was slim and there are no modes other than on. I had two of those (lost both). I bought the streamlight microstream because of the reversing clip, I could put it on the bill of my hat instead of holding in my mouth. The clip broke pretty quickly when it got caught in the fabric of the couch and I stood up. Now it just rides around in my pocket.

I never really knew how much I used a light until I lost it and had to do without. Trust me, when you have it you use it a lot more than you would think, especially if it is readily available and simple to use.
