I am gifted with "rust fingers". I know if I touch it I better oil it... I have posted previously about letting all of my wood and blue stuff go because if I don't wipe down anything not in the safe constantly. It will rust....

I have come back around to blue and wood is the way. But I come right back into rust issues😢

I've seen firearms that have sat forgotten in family members closets for decades. No care, no nothing. Just there. Used for varmint control, etc. Then put back in the closet or behind the front door or wherever.

Pull it out to use again and it's perfect.

But my stuff. Just sitting in my humidity controlled safe. If I forget my diligence to wipe it down constantly. I get rust blooms like I left it on a boat on the coast.

How in the heck do I keep my blued and wood stuff from instantly forming rust?

I bring this up because I picked up a Rossi levergun. Sat it in the reloading room. Was at the FFL for a month. Two days after it came home. Found a rust bloom on the lever😞

I sometimes use boiled linseed oil on stuff that's just going to sit in the safe. It works great on blued metal and wood but it does take forever to dry properly. The stuff that gets shot regularly obviously gets cleaned and oiled more often. Just about any modern gun oil or even engine oil (clean) will keep metal from rusting, especially if you're storing things properly.
What about just wearing gloves?

I've been using Renaissance Wax, it works great for non moving parts. I had some rust bloom on my Ruger max 9 earlier this spring. And that was with me wiping it down daily. Since I put the wax on the slide I haven't had to wipe it down anymore. The stuff is very durable, and I've been super impressed with its performance. I've also only had to reapply after each range and cleaning session. That's with daily carry in the spring/summer/fall this year.

Edit: spelling.

Ps: Works fantastically under wood grips also.

Waxing is an old trick I learned about many years ago. I think I first saw it in a Remington manual in the 70's. When I used to ran a gun counter, I used to wax all the display guns and it helped a lot. Back then I used simple spray wax, because it's what I had available. Makes guns look good too.

Another trick is to apply lube/protectant when the metal is relatively hot.

I'm an oily fella myself, but it doesn't seem to cause this problem. I guess that makes me lucky... kind of?

keep an old LCP in my pocket when i do sweaty yard work that finally picked up a couple fuzzy spots on the slide. I figure that now that the door is cracked, the door will start opening, so i really need to 0000 it and find a solution to keep it from progressing. never really thought about wax.
I've thought about making a little hot box to help set oil into the metal for stuff i know i won't be shooting forever. cleaning once a year is still a lot for me to get around to.

I keep a light coat of ballistol on all my guns, check on em every other week and give em a wipe down and another light coat. Never had a gun rust on me yet... knock on wood.

Rust sucks!
