Been in a back and forth between these two set ups on a 16 inch AR.

3X (or 5X ?) Prism with a side or top mounted micro red dot

VS

1-6 LPVO.

Thoughts?

How about a 3x prism and no MRD? 3x is that sweet spot of meaningful magnification but I can also shoot it like a red dot. Granted, my experience handling a 3x is limited, I like the feel of it more than an LPVO and generally dislike MRD’s hanging off my guns.

I'm running a 3x PA prism on my 14.5" AR. With the lighted reticle on I have no issues running target transitions inside of 20 yards. The red dot would be faster/ easier in awkward situations where you won't be in the eyebox for a powered optic.

End of the day If you have $ get an lvpo. To match the quality of glass on a $300 prism you have to spend big money on an lvpo. The cheaper lvpos will lose clarity at the higher magnification levels.

Personally I prioritize clarity of glass but every person is different and whatever the mission of your rifle is.

Myself and @Jayne tested several setups awhile ago.
Bottom line is you are a bit faster with a red dot under 25 but otherwise equal at ranges up to 200 yards.
To me for your two specific setups it comes down to training and weight. If you don’t mind the weight get the LVPO. If you are willing to train transitioning from magnified optic to red dot go with that. If you don’t like either got with a red dot or 1x prism

I regret not going with a Prism and MRD. - Or at the very least, regret not getting better glass. Granted, I got a good deal and know I was going budget to try out the LPVO...but I kinda wish I just got an ACOG, or even the PA GLx.

I am new to Prisms, and went PA 3X on my Tavor X95 because its already a fairly heavy gun. For up close work, it is maybe a few fractions of a second slower than a red dot. For targeting very small objects quickly (example, focusing on a doorknob while practicing), I find I can peer over the top of the optic with both eyes open, and then quickly be at the ready by just bringing the gun/optic up into position without losing focus, and consequently not taking any time to have to hunt for it. For something like human-sized center mass acquisition, I don't think its any slower than the dot.

If weight is a concern, I would try the prism if you intend it to be a CQB weapon. Worst case, you have way more room for a red dot with less offset than you would a LPVO.

If weight isn't a concern or you're more worried about further distances, I'd probably just go with the LPVO, recognizing you'll be spending a good bit more than the prism for comparable optical quality.
