Southern Pines, N.C. — Moore County deputies were involved in a shooting early Friday morning outside of Southern Pines.

Sheriff Ronnie Fields told WRAL News that deputies were responding to a noise complaint at 306 Fairview Court around 1:30 a.m. When they knocked on the door, a soldier with a weapon answered.

Fields said that one deputy fired his weapon and hit the man. That man was taken to First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst with an injury that is not believed to be life-threatening.

Because of the military connection, investigators from Fort Bragg will help with the follow-up. The State Bureau of Investigation will look into the shooting, which is protocol whenever a law enforcement officer fires a weapon.

When the shot was fired, Fields said, the other deputy took a few steps back and fell down the steps. He, too, was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

Lack of information in this one and since there is no video (apparently Moore County does not have body cams), it will be hard to determine what exactly happened if the accounts from the two parties differ.

In my opinion it all hinges on if the door was opened and the position of the weapon if opened. The story just mentions that the soldier had a weapon when he answered the door.

I somewhat fault the soldier if he opened the door without looking through the peephole or sidelight to determine who it was (assuming available). If someone comes to my door, I am going to turn on the light and look to see who it is before I decide to open it. If it looks sketchy, no way am I opening the door. But there is no information in the story that the door was even opened. The way it is written, the officer may have fired when he saw the soldier approaching the door with a weapon. Need more info.

Before I got a camera doorbell I pretty much couldn't see who was at my door if they knocked or rant the doorbell. I answered the door with a gun. So according to you if I got shot by the police in my own home because of that it is my fault? I'm sorry, but that is the dumbest thing I have read in a while.

I remember a story with a female officer at a front door with glass. She was responding to a 911 hang up. She knocked saw a male in the kitchen pick up a gun and walk towards the door. She shined her flash light on herself and I think the guy saw she was an officer stopped walking. She had unholstered her weapon when she saw him coming. The guy then made an awkward movement an intoxicated person could make bringing up his gun sweeping across the officer while he started to turn back and she shot him. It's a difficult situation to make a judgment call at times.

Reading comprehension is so lacking these days. Notice that I said if a peephole or sidelights were available. Most of the time there is some way to look and see who is at the door.

If I did not have a way to see who was at the door, I do not know if I would open the door at night unless I knew for sure who it was.

Our reading comprehension is just fine. Even if he could see them it is his house. You made an assumption and blamed the victim so just own it.

The only time a cop has come to my door and I had a gun in my hand:

We were allowing a young lady from the church to stay with us when she was in between homes. One night in the middle of the night I heard a sound which sounded at the time like someone trying to break in my door. I told my wife to call 911, I got my gun and went downstairs.

We did not have a way to see who was at the door but I could determine through the side curtains It was likely her because I saw her car out front. Even so, I had the gun behind the door and cracked the door about 2 in in positioned it in such a way where someone could not just barge in easily. I determined it was her and she came in and she was apologetic because she had been trying the wrong key.

I close the door, 2 minutes later a knock at the door, I asked who it was, and the guy responded "deputy". I opened the door about three or four inches and had my gun kind of behind my leg, in the moment forgot to put it away or set it down.

He saw it and politely asked me to put it away and asked if he could speak to me for a minute about what was going on. Very civil. I said it down, told him what happened, he was good with it and gone in 90 seconds.

There are a lot of factors that can go into a situation like this that does not need to merit a bad outcome.

Could have fooled me, I did not know I was addressing more than one person. Do both of you agree?
I'm sure I'm not the only person that thought it was a dumb comment. Just admit you made an assumption and defended a cop shooting someone in their own home. If you knocked on someone's door and they answered while carrying a gun would you shoot them?

That's how it should go.

Let me just interject. @blewis3 is a friend of mine, and a damn well educated and smart one.

@ChickenHawk is also a friend of mine, and a damn well educated and smart one.

Aside from the fact that neither one of you are handsome, I like both y’all a lot and would like you to pretend you are in my house.

Carry on.

:p

Almost all of my close friends in life I started out arguing with. Ask @Bull Durham

He ain’t lying!
The first time we met was in Morehead City working and I wanted to drive him in the ground like a post, lol.
He grows on ya though.
Turned out to be a dang good friend.

No I did not defend a cop shooting someone. Again lack of reading comprehension. It is just a comment that before I open the door late at night I am going to try to see who it is. If it is a potential bad guy, I am not going to open the door even if I have a weapon. If it is a police officer, I am going to holster the weapon or place it in a non threatening position before opening the door.

As I stated in my post we do not have enough info to determine what went down. I just think that it was poor judgement on the soldiers part to open the door in the situation if he does not know who it is.

There are tons of questions. Did the police announce themselves when they knocked? Was the firearm pointed at the police or at his side? There are actions that people take that while they may be legal, that may place them in a bad situation where they can be hurt. That is poor judgement. As Andrew branca states any time you are in a gun fight you have a non zero chance of being killed or seriously injured. Sometimes it is best to avoid that gun fight.

If the soldier had the gun at his side and the officer shot him, the officer is in the wrong. But it could have been avoided if the soldier knowing it was the police (by looking or asking) put the weapon away before answering the door. Again there are a lot of unknowns and many scenarios of how it could have happened, but in 70 to 80 percent of them better judgement on the soldiers part could have avoided the situation.

I’d also like to say that @fieldgrade is also a friend of mine, and I also like to imagine that I’m at his house!
Didn’t you get that big honking leather chair from m house when I moved, that may or may not smell like a baseball glove?

Just like at my house!

You sold it when you so eloquently described it as “a chair for large sized humans”.
I figured that if it didn’t fit, I might grow into it!
And yes, still smells like a well loved mit.

Thanks to the ladder you sold me for cheap I have been asked to take care of limbs, change spotlights, and all kinds of other crap. I think you knew you were selling me a curse.

That’s a damn good ladder. That said, you should hide it.

Be in
The idea that any cop has a right to bear arms or act in self defense in any situation in which a citizen does not is insane.
i agree, but there have been shootings in the lawful but awful category. Wasn’t there one where a good guy shot the bad guy but the responding officers shot the good guy?

You’ll soon find out some facts which will make you wish you had waited to rush to judgement; that’s all I can say. Bad situation, totally clean shoot.
Both deputies did great based on their positions when the action started.
Don’t even bother turning your keyboard rage towards me, I won’t engage.
