PSA- Don't Let The Kiddos Near A Peloton Treadmill

How about don't let them play near ANY treadmill. Where were the parents and why would you let kid play on a treadmill? I saw this video awhile ago and the first thing that came to my mind was just more idiot parents not watching their kids. At least the kid was lucky enough to not get hurt.

What you talkin 'bout? They had a camera right there. lol

I heard at least one kid has died that way.
Also, does the peloton not have a safety key like most do?
don't get me wrong, I bypass most safety keys I see... but i don't have kids.

I just looked at some videos and there IS a safety key... but peloton stupidly designed this treadmill to store the key IN PLACE, with the attachment cord holding it in the socket, and a magnet making sure it's all held together.
They're going to lose this lawsuit...

fun story - when the movers reassembled my treadmill, it did not work. We sent some pictures of it NOT moving even though it was turned on at full speed and got reimbursed for the cost. Once we got our money, i opened the panel, reconnected the safety key, and now we have a working treadmill AND the money. I may or may not have known exactly what the problem was before we made the claim, but the deal was they disassemble it, move it, and reassemble it in working order.
Hire better people, movers.

My son had a treadmill accident when he was 2. He managed to bypass the baby gate downstairs, climb up the stairs and sneak into our bedroom very quietly while I was running on the treadmill. Unbeknownst to me, he touched the moving belt at the rear of the treadmill, and it pulled his hand under the roller. He didn't cry out at all and I only noticed due to the treadmill sounding a little "off normal".

After pulling his little hand out of the treadmill, we saw that the friction had ground off multiple layers of skin. No major damage, but he still has the scars at age 14 to show for it.

Moving forward we always locked the bedroom door when running and unplugged the power when not in use.

Yes, the Peloton has a safety key. Yes, the Peloton is covered with warning labels. That design for the key is no different than most treadmills. If you are not using the machine and have any concern for pets and small kids, you do not “store” the key on the machine.

Yes, the affected parties ignored the labels and left the shutoff key in the machine while simultaneously not keeping up with their kids.

This is not the fault of the machine or of the company. It is an owner/parental failure and sensationalist “journalism” and nothing more.

I'm not saying you're wrong. In fact, I think you're right... but they're going to have to argue why it was a safe idea to design it specifically to store with the key in place, and didn't put a guard under the back edge like many do to prevent this sort of stuff from happening.

I think they're going to do a sig-style "free voluntary upgrade" and pay through the nose for the complaints already filed. Future models will have the upgrades built in. Since these are basically smart devices, I would also expect that there will be on-screen warnings and acknowledgements you have to click to keep using them.

Holy crap I was sure that kid's neck was gonna snap.

Hard to watch a child be helpless and be injured.

People will blame the company, lawyers will line up.

Hell, people blame John deere for cutting off their kids legs with a riding lawnmower. Even after instructions, manuals, stickers and reverse cutout switches are installed.

People blame gas can companies for lighting themselves on fire.

People do not want to take responsibility for their actions and lack of caution, they want to blame the device.

Still nowhere near as dangerous as a trampoline.
having nearly broken my neck on one, but lucked out and only had a nose exploding blood and ruining a wood deck... the danger of using trampolines is severely understated

Peloton decided today to recall the treadmills.

My almost 15 year old daughter broke her ankle jumping off our trampoline several years ago. She had to jump over the step ladder I had placed there. This was on labor day with about 25 people at the house and I was grilling. Ended up at Urgent care for 6 hours and my dad finished grilling for me.

I doubt Peloton decided to do that. I'm sure there was some government involvement in that decision.
Yes, CPSC called it a voluntary recall but sure there was threats along the way.

They aren't going to win this. A three year old was killed due to an incident with one two months ago after getting trapped under one. Suffered a brain injury or something.
