PSA - Hodgdon selling direct now - multiple powders in stock

In the world of eCommerce, the old school Manufacturer > Distributor > Retail Location > End User model is done.

systems, processes and shipping integrations have made it just easy - or at least significantly easier - for Manufacturers to go straight to end user.

Agree completely with this

If and only if you have the marketing and the room for safety stock.

Typically D2C from my experience is a hell of a cost for safety stock and a lot of high volume shipping of 1 or 2 items

It’s about time. The other manufacturers will likely follow suit. More money for the company is the bottom line. They can sell the product for more profit and still be lower than current market price.

I think it’s been like this for at least a few weeks. Saw it on Accurate Shooter. As with everything else, mainstream is out of stock but the are some to be had. Almost grabbed some Leverolution. I’m happy see it.

Absolutely, new problems come with this such as carrying cost of inventory, customer service and logistics. However profitability prevails and it will force other suppliers to follow suit as you mentioned.

I was tempted to pick up CFE pistol because I cannot find clays anywhere. Have been using clays for 45acp and 38spl

Can't see this go to market model working for a mfr. They are used to selling and shipping in volume. Retail customers are a PITA. Ive seen this before and the mfr is always out of stock but the resellers have plenty. We'll see how this works if they every get any inventory.

Much of the stuff is out of stock, and they almost have to be this way. They'd not be smart to reserve inventory to put on their own shelves, while refusing to ship to distribution. For the time being they're not wise to undercut their retail locations unless they're REALLY REALLY sure they have the swat to make a go of this ... which I doubt. It's not the same skill set to manufacture things as it is to manage retail distribution logistics.

I wish this would work, but I don't see it. The hazmat shipping economy of scale is against them, as is their current pricing .

Right on target - I work for a bulk material producer and trying to sell small package sizes direct to retail is a nightmare.

Not easy at all and can really stretch capabilities. Very possible Hogdon is using a 3rd party distributor for order fulfillment - exactly the path I took for our online sales portal.

But expect more of this as producers claw back profits from resellers who gouge at will.

I vote for Amazon to pick this up. Can't wait for "free shipping on orders over $25".

(Jeff B., you listening?) :)

Stock comes and goes. I watch FB groups, a few other forums I follow, etc. and guys will post up when it comes in stock. If you're in the magical place at the right time, the sun shines through the clouds on a dogs ass once in a while.
One time a buddy texted me and gave me a heads up, and I stalled to take a leak or something in the middle of adding to cart and the checkout process and it went out of stock. I learned don't jack around if it's in stock. I grabbed a couple juggs of Varget a bit back, and split hazmat with a buddy on another order of 16lbs 4530 that he was putting in for.

Its not easy,
sometimes the cost to pick and ship eats all the profit of that one item even from Cost to MSRP.

I think of Amazon as a distributor. Once you are in Prime Warehouse it's a pick ticket equal to any other distributor, but with a better retailer. LOL

1lb shipping is $35 so 1lb of powder is $68
Dang! That's getting pricey.
Midway charges $12 hazmat on a lb of powder. Shipping was free on my last order. $42 for a pound of H335 to my door.

I want to meet the guy who buys one (1) pound only.
Had seven other items in my last order but only one of them was powder.

Nice to meet you.

Back during the last shortages (2012-2013) I had just gotten started reloading. I found myself wanting powder but not wanting to buy more than one pound of anything until I had a chance to try it. Buying online was a terrible option, as most places only had one or two powders available at any one time - hazmat for one pound was cost prohibitive for a tightwad like me. So, I hit all the gun shows and picked up a pound of whatever I could find when it was available. I have about 30 different pistol powders now as a result. The downside is that I have more powders than I need, but the upside is that I got to try them all and know what will work for me. I have good loads figured out for most of them. I have already used up several of them that I decided not to restock, and stocked up on the few that I really liked. If I have to order online now, I will get #8 jugs so hazmat fees will be a little easier to swallow.

But, I learned my lesson from 8 years ago. I started stocking up when things became available again and prices came down. I’ve got enough to last several years.

I'd say that was similar to my experiences / path. I'd find local powder, buy a pound for load dev, and if it was a powder that I liked, worked well, etc, then I'd pick up 8lb jugs online or local, depending on pricing.
