PVC target stands

I’ve had a tab open on my phone for over a year, maybe even two, in case I wanted to make some. Here’s the link:

^that^ version has an additional horizontal brace on the vertical pipes, but maybe they’re not really needed?

ETA: I read it again…and down at the bottom they have a cheaper design option, which eliminates that brace as well as the rear piece

Hahaha….I’ve had this one bookmarked for about the same length of time…finally got around to doing it.

I was at a small conference for local universities physiology departments once and one of the professors pulled some of these out of his truck to set up student presentation posters. I looked at him and saw he also had a pocket knife in his pocket, which is somewhat rare in university world... I said "are you a glock guy?" and he was like "WHAT?" and i was like "you don't scream gun guy, but if you know you know". turns out his edc was an m&p shield.

This clever fella got the university to pay for "poster stands" that he would sneak out to take shooting on the weekends!

1.5” PVC and fittings

I built a set just like that about 10 years ago on recommendation from someone on the previous forums.
My recommendation is to not glue the joints. It makes it easier to transport and easier to replace parts that get shot up by the guy doing his first ever mag dump.

You can skip the primer step and use some teflon tape on the pvc solvent can cap, it keeps the solvent from drying out. You need to buy two cans otherwise, one for now and the second for the next time you need pvc solvent.

Quick price check today and you can’t even buy the three 10’ for the $43 total he mentions…

$43.02 for three of them. Plus you need all the fittings, another 2’ of pipe, and the furring strings.

There’s a ~$3 discount on the 10’ pipes if you buy 10+ of them. So if you wanted to build a dozen frames at once, that would work. Three sets of three pipes, and the 10th one would replace the three 2’ pipes on the list.

Just for info, here’s his list, and what I see on HD’s app for pricing:

  • 3 pieces: Charlotte Pipe 1-1/2″ x 10 ft. schedule 40 PVC end pipe ($14.34/ea)
  • 1 piece: Charlotte Pipe 1-1/2″ x 2 ft. schedule 40 PVC end pipe
  • 8 pieces: 1-1/2″ ABS hub x hub x hub sanitary tee ($2.58)
  • 16 pieces: 1-12″ ABS 90 degree hub x hub elbow ($2.11) ($1.42 for ABS)
  • 4 pieces: 1×2″ x 8 ft furring strip ($2.50)

I remember buying the furring strips for under $1 (maybe 97¢?) a couple years ago.

Pipe = $43.02
Tees= $20.64
Elbows = $33.76
Furring = $10
$107.42 - and that’s without the extra 2’ of pipe

I’ll start keeping at eye on the dumpers while I’m washing streets. 😁

PVC had gone up since it comes from petrochemicals. Thanks Joe Biden.

Ballast in the base sections. Awesome idea. Solves the wind problem.

Thatsa vurry nice-ah.

I built bases out of 2x4 and think I am at about $12 for each stand. 1 10’ board per stand plus 1x2 for the uprights and 8 screws. Sides are 36”, 2 cross supports in the center are 22” and then a 16” 1x2 between the supports to help keep the uprights from falling over and get the proper gap. Since they are 3.5” tall, they are easy to stack in the garage and my vehicle
