Rabbit Ridge is having its grand opening this weekend. Here is the websites link. Location is Ararat Va.

Wes the owner is great. I did my ccw with him and it was plain fun. I haven't met all of the crew yet but most are very knowledgeable and willing to help. I may head up my self depends on the kids birthday weekend events.

I wonder their reason for why no steel or aluminum cased ammo. They must collect the range brass and don't want to be bothered sorting it.

I can understand them not wanting you to shoot their steel targets with LAP but not paper either?

I went there and shot a couple weeks ago. Nice guys running the range. It was half off for the day ($10) all day. I’m only 20 minutes from it so I’ll be going back.

I went there a few times when it was a range/gun store. Now it’s range only, different ownership. It seems like they have big plans to make it an even better place to shoot.

They asked me to pick up some cases and throw them in the trash on my way out. The place is littered with them from the previous owners letting it pile up. They didn’t mention anything about steel or aluminum cases to me. In fact, I shot aluminum cased 9mm on the handgun range.

From their "Range Rules":
-
  • Rapid fire must be approved by range staff.
  • No outside targets are permitted. All targets must be purchased from Calibers.
  • Prohibited Ammunition

The following types of ammunition may not be used at any time:
    • Steel/aluminum cased ammunition.
    • Tracers, incendiaries, or armor-piercing ammunition
    • Any explosive or pyrotechnic device.
What is "rapid fire"?
Why no outside targets? Just charge a little more for the range use.
No issues with the Ammo except the steel/aluminum.

Guess I'll have to ask if I can get there.

I agree with you I scratched my head with those rules as well. I have me some steel 9mm too. I wonder if the ammo has to do with the labor and time to clean it up.. 🤔

I've heard two reasons from other places about targets. One is based on profit from being the exclusive source. The other is based on controlling the types of paper targets being shot...avoiding the realistic human/actual photos of people from being targets. While it hurts nothing it's a bad look to see political and ethnic type targets being shot up and can lead to some wilting flower making statements about being offended.

Almost all of my Grendel plinking ammo is steel cased and steel core - so that's out.
Most of my 556 is 62gr LAP so that is out too.

I don't necessarily disagree with either. If it is the later, a few seconds to look at the targets I want to use wouldn't hurt. But, would they have the manpower to look at every customer's targets? I could see that as an issue.

In any case, I'll go see what they have to offer and ask them. No real sense in debating it here.
