My mother's first cousin, Gilbert Bass, USMC 1936-1966...was in China pre-WWII, the Pacific in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He retired an E9. We'd visit him a couple times a year in Jacksonville (where lived after he retired), and one of my life regrets was not sitting down with him with a tape recorder.

A few from boot camp in 94, to the Med, and a return visit with the kiddos about 5-6 years ago.

My Dad just sent me an email last night that simply said "memories" and had these pictures in it.

He was first a Frogman with UDT 11 and then a SEAL with SEAL Team One (Class 36). Did a few tours in Vietnam with Team One along with a pretty unbelievable list of other things. Insanely tough , even still at 78, and very humble. Never told me a thing about anything he did until he reached his 70's. His eyes light up when he recounts missions and stories. Gives me goose bumps listening to them. The things they did in the jungle and deltas were simply amazing. He's in most of these pictures (no shirt, boat 3).

Not to take away from SEALs, those UDT pioneers were amazing. Jumping into enemy waters with nothing more than fins, mask, a swim trunks. There were no SOPs or even a book to go by. Just plain courage.
