I wanted to write this as I couldn't find any good info on the practical application of the Hornady Sub-X 190 grain 30 caliber bullets. Following is my experience from a buck shot December 2021. This was copied and pasted from a post I wrote on another forum. I hope this helps folks that hunt here.
I purchased some of these Bullets as Midway Blems, but they are very obviously the Hornady Sub-X. Loaded in my 300 BO pistol with 8" barrel and a SiCo Hybrid can. Took a little work, but got them to feed/function fine at sub velocity using H110. I do have to seat them farther out than the cannelure to get them to feed. Haven't had a chance to chrono but they are subsonic on cold mornings.
I was finally able to take a smaller framed buck in December 2021 at about 55 yards (estimated), slightly quartering away. Bullet hit behind front shoulder and was found under the skin in the offside shoulder (missed entry shoulder, passed through a portion of the offside shoulder).
Good expansion (I was concerned about that as I haven't been able to find much "real life" information on these) and great penetration. I believe the bullet would've exited if not for passing through the lower part of the offside shoulder. Blood shot meat in that shoulder was minimal and devastating performance on the internals.
Deer bolted and ran maybe 60 yards, no blood but would've been easy enough to find anywhere except the thickest of thickets. These are my current short range, "quiet" hunting loads in the BO. That is until I can find a good load with the cavity back bullets...
Hopefully this review is helpful for those of you considering them for hunting. I wouldn't hesitate to use them on game up to at least deer size as subsonic projos within a reasonable distance.
