Regular visitor....

Saw one in Sylva yesterday on 107 just past UPS. Just walking through the field. Never saw one the entire time I lived up there.

The 2 blackies that occasionally roam Oriental are people “aware” and almost tame. I would not walk up to them not turn my back but they are pretty much “Mildred the Bear” types.

They are smart … the older female pretty much knows where to go and not go … Ms. Betty’s bird feeders means a beat down with a broom but the dumpster behind the theater means all the leftover popcorn after weekend evening shows. The younger female hasn’t quite figured things out but she knows to stay on the edge of town. The locals have been through enough seasons with them to handle it. The one big worry though is when they cross the roads in traffic … even a small blackie can reek havoc on vehicles.

I’ve seen half a doz bears this year, smallest maybe 100 lbs, biggest maybe 4-500 pounds. The biggest was crossing 64 in the Alligator Wildlife Refuge.
My employee and I were heading to Hatteras early one morning to do a NCDOT ferry dive job when we actually had to stop the truck for the big brute to lumber across the road!
They’re fun to watch as well as fine table fare! I don’t hunt them, but I have friends that give me some each year because they know I’m one of the few locals that dearly love fried bear.

They so much bigger in eastern NC. At least my observation, no data to support. A friend of mine shot one a couple years ago near the Alligator Refuge that weighed 800#.

Your Tomato is root bound. It would benifit with a larger pot, fertilizer and regular watering.

You are correct...the world record for a harvested black bear is 880 pounds, shot in Craven County, southeast of Greenville, I believe it was back in 1998. Coastal bruins in excess of 500+ lbs are not uncommon.

Yup, lots of soybean, corn, and trash cans to feed on in the coastal plain.

Largest black bears and the highest bear population densities.

You just missed the Black Bear Festival in June. https://ncbearfest.com/

Me and my younger daughter are staying with 2 other dad/daughter pairs at an Airbnb in Black Mountain this weekend for a Yguides event. Had a campfire last night, and this big bear walked between us and the house, making a straight line for the apple tree in the backyard, where it stayed and ate apples off the ground for a while before climbing over the fence at the back of the property to leave. Was crazy seeing one so close, and it was so quiet we almost didn’t notice it walking past.
@Gray i think this is really close to your house, up above the Tractor Supply.

That could have gone horribly wrong. Unless you had the proper tools on hand to blast an animal that size.

Back in 2015 The old widow in the house beside our shop kept telling us she saw a bear in her backyard. She had been slipping downhill mentally even before her husband died so we didn’t think much of it. About a week after she mentioned it last, a sheriffs deputy took this pic directly across the interstate from us. Crossing the off-ramp.

I would never have suspected this area having them around.
