Been squirrel hunting with dogs for a few years now and have always used a shotgun. This morning my father in law persuaded me to borrow one of his many .22 rifles. He selected for me his Remington model 550-1 and I must say it beat the brakes of the only .22 I ever owned (marlin model 60). I'm way out of practice with a rifle but I managed to hit a squirrel in the top of a 3 story hardwood while the wind was making the tree sway and it was scurrying around. Gut shot the poor thing but it knocked him out of the tree for the dog to finish off. Just curious anyone else own one of these and find it to be more accurate than other similar rifles? Or was I just getting lucky since this was my first time squirrel hunting with a rifle.

Cut my teeth on one. No telling how many rounds we put thru that thing. When I could see I would shoot the 50 round box they came in at 80 yards with iron sights.

Once shot a full size silhouette target at 300 yards and hit it in the leg the stomach and the throat with irons.

One of my fav.22 rifles. I have one that I traded for almost 45 years ago and it still shoots amazing and will eat .22 or, .22 long, .22 shorts and CB Caps.

I have one my dad gave to me. He got back in 1955 or so. I like it a lot. It is not the most accurate .22 I have seen, but it shoots anything, is reliable and works good for hunting.

They are awesome guns, very accurate and ultra reliable. Had to sell mine when I sold pretty much all my guns and haven't bought another yet.

Yep. Mine does. You can even mix it up.

Had one for a while. Never shot it much and sold it. Had a buddy that collected them. He had and probably still has a couple new in the box. If you ever take one apart there is a very specific sequence of how the parts in the receiver go back together. One part backwards (easy to do) and it will not work. Carbine Williams is credited with inventing the floating chamber that makes it digest about any 22 ammo. As they say on Shooting USA..."One of history's guns."

Funny my father in law shoots nothing but CCI minimags in it. He's convinced that's the only thing reliable in any of his automatics. I'm gonna have to get me one of these. Ive noticed those mini mags over penetrate and mess up the carcass a lot on the squirrel so I'd like to try running shorts or sub sonics when I get one

You mean the guy who invented the M1 carbine while he was in prison?

I have one I picked up a couple years ago. Its a pretty accurate shooter and a great gun. Shorts, longs and long rifle. I don't think there is anything on the market today that can touch it.
My wife was with me at the local gun/pawn shop. I was looking for a new 22 rifle. I spotted that 550-1 sitting in the used rifle rack in the middle of the floor. I picked it up , checked it out and took it over to the counter and told the guy I would take it. My wife asked " Don't you want to look at anything else". I said no, there's nothing else to look at. This is it.
A great American classic. I'm proud to own it.

Have one and yes it's a great skwirl gun but I must say I love my Marlin 60 like no other 22

Caution. If you ever need to take the action apart for cleaning or repair you had better do some studying on it before you do. That sear spring cup/case/ screw can be one big headache if the threads strip out. Caution Caution Caution.
