So I got a Remington 700 308 a couple years back and it has a tasco 6-24 on it. Its the "Dicks" special with the 26 inch heavy barrel I think it was marketed as a varmint special. My question is, are these decent guns and what kind of max range can these be pushed to if I wanted to start shooting rifle, its been a long time. I expect that I should get a better scope? And if so is there anything semi decent in the 100 to 150 price range? Thanks for any input.

Get used to the gun at 100 yards first.

.308 can kill paper at 1000 yrds easy.

100-150 is not alot of money for glass. So you might want to just keep what you got.

If not the Bushnell Legend is a good scope in that price range. (they don’t make this one anymore but they are still available at different places)

Thanks. I have the tasco sighted in and have shot in probably 200rds in total at 100 to 150 yards. Never shot it out beyond that so I wasnt sure if this gun was capable of long distance. Appreciate the advice

The only weakness to the Dick's Special 700's is the stock. Too light and flexy and the bbl is probably not free floating. That can be fixed with brass washer shims on the action screws to a point...and the stock can be filled with bedding compound. Probably nothing wrong with that scope for all the way out to 1000yds depending on it's elevation adjustment range. A 15 or 20 minute scope base would definitely get you to 1000yds. The gun is willing and able. 168gr Federal Gold Medal Match ammo will get you to 800yds super sonic still I think and it will get you to 1000yds but not super sonic. Good luck.

Sounds like you all think the gun itself is capable of the 1k mark, even if the shooter isnt :)....thanks for all the feedback. Also not to change the topic but if you were looking for something like this to do medium to long distance would you go FFP for the sight or not? Not very informed on which is better for what

My 2 centavos...FFP is supposedly great for range ing a target at any magnification because the reticle zooms up and down with the magnification. I have one and I dont like it. Cant get used to the reticle changing size. I 've had more success using a Xmas tree reticle with hold over marks out to 800yds. I have a Bushnell Xtreme 6-24x50 that was $250 to my door that has that type of reticle and I got first shot hits all the way from 300 to 800yds using it. I was amazed.

So im curios, is the bushnell clear when zoomed to 24x? I know the tasco varmit scope I have once its past 16x is blurry (ive been informed tasco is a pretty terrible scope) so I was curious if the bushnell is clear and offers any advantage other than glass clarity. Thanks for the info

For quality glass, Count on spending $1 per meter you want it to shoot.

Get it bedded by a competent gunsmith.
Swap out the trigger for a Flat 2 stage precision trigger.

This will tighten up what the weapon can do.
Add some 175 grain bots tail hollow point Sierra Match Kings, and you are pushing the envelope even farther.

At that point the weapon will outshoot your abilities.
Train, train, train, and tighten your groups up to match the rifles performance

The Xtreme zoomed up may look a little hazy but that's typical of a scope at that price range. The xmas tree reticle is pretty handy and pretty much dead on for a 168gr FGMM bullet all the way to 800yds. If you can find the 6-24 Xtreme on Amazon and get it and its not any better than what you have, you can send it back for full refund.

FFP is the cats meow.

Really good glass will start at a grand and go forever.

Long range shooting isn’t cheap but good equipment never is.

Enjoy what you have and work towards the other if it comes to that.

That Bushy scope is available at this writing at Brownells for $257 and free shipping and they will take it back no ?'s asked as long as you dont mount it and put ring marks on it.
