*sigh*

There once was a time when a replacement key cost less than a buck. Alas...

I bought a 2006 Acura MDX from an old couple my wife and I know from church. Of course, it only had one key/FOB.

No biggie...I got great deal on the vehicle. More than enough of a deal to justify the cost of a new spare key/FOB.

But man... it's STILL insane!

Last time I had this done was for a used car I bought at a dealership, and they didn't have the replacement key/FOB in stock. So they cut the price of the cost of the car and I got it done later.

ACE Hardware, it turns out, makes them too. Just called them and it'll be $90 for the key, $190 for the FOB.

Joy Locksmith said $180 for both.

I haven't checked a dealer yet, but Lord knows they won't be any cheaper.

I'm thinking of buying a couple aftermarket FOBs and programming them myself, then just having a couple new keys cut/programmed.

I work at an Acura dealership. It will be $250-$350 for a FOB/key and programming. You will need to have ALL the keys programmed at the same time if you want them all to work.

The FOBs don't require any specialized programming equipment, according to what I've researched. I can do the FOBs myself and probably get away with after market ones much cheaper.

And yes... they all have to be programmed at the same time, not just the new FOBs.

The keys, however, do require a programmer. And they'd all have to be reprogrammed at the same time, too.

I'd LIKE to get two spares. But at these prices, I'm thinking one spare will be just fine thank you very much!

Batteries Plus? I never realized they did this! I'll check them out!

Batteries Plus shows the key for $30.99. Cutting/programming shouldn't significantly add to that. I could get two spares this way, quite affordably.

They don't list the FOB, though...unless I missed it. But I know I can get aftermarket ones very reasonably elsewhere if need be.

I'll give them a call in a few days and check them out. Just because I can't find it on their website didn't mean they can't get it.

Batteries plus beats those prices, and I found a guy on Facebook marketplace that does it even cheaper. I am understandably hesitant about doing it through him though.
yeah, i accidentally left my whole keychain with the greasy longhair guys changing my car tires instead of just the one key they needed, and i've been on high alert for 2 weeks.
No way i'm letting some dude on facebook marketplace who specializes in breaking into things know i exist.

Check ebay for replacement FOB's for your car. youtube has programming video, not sure if that applies to your model.

Here’s a “Pro Tip”

Buy a third key from the start and program it yourself (if you can). Then you’ll only be out the key/fob and cutting. Its a lot cheaper this way…then you can make another if you lose one along the way. Thats where this truck comes handy.

My son just bought another Toyota 4Runner to fix up and flip. It only came with one key and a broken keyfob. He ordered some keyfobs on Amazon this weekend and I programmed them with the instructions provided. It took a few tries to figure it out but they only cost around $25 for both. Next is getting keys cut and trying to figure out programming them.

Y'all wanna hear something hilarious?

Our youngest daughter drives a 2007 Edge we bought from a neighbor. He had long since lost the door lock code, but we didn't really care when we bought the car. My wife took it into the dealer about a year ago for some recall work and asked them about the door lock code. They gave her a paper with the code on it...which she promptly lost, upsetting our youngest daughter to no end.

Fast forward to last weekend: "Daddy, can you figure out how to reprogram the door lock code for me?"

ME: "I dunno...gimme a few minutes to see what the internet says."

I did a YouTube search and guess what? The door key code is on a sticker, located behind a plastic panel under the driver's side dash to the left of the emergency brake!

Yes...it was THAT simple!
