So I've been jonesing for a MAK-90 for awhile, but having a hard time paying the prices you usually see them at. Unfortunately back when they were $299 I was playing in sandboxes after a long day in the salt mines of Kindergarten. I've seen some deals pop up here now and again but haven't been quick enough on them.

I walked into Hazelwood Tactical on my way to the airport last week and they had a bubba'd one sitting there. The furniture doesn't worry me, but at some point in this poor rifle's life, someone drilled holes in the muzzle, likely to try and get a clamp-on brake to stay on. A couple spots are dimpled and two are straight through. It's also got a Romanian side folder stock on it and a dong lower handguard. Luckily the upper handguard is original.

The artist even signed their work.

Additionally it's also got a super awesome dust cover optic mount with a real high quality scope on it. I'm not sure what happened but I tripped and dropped those both in the trash and can't be bothered to dig them out. Oh well.

So Hazelwood had $900 on the tag, which was obviously way too high. They came down to $750 pretty easily, so I put $100 on it. When I went to pick it up, I himhawed some more and got another $100 off, walking out the door for $650. I'm sure they gave some poor sap $200 in store credit on the trade in, so I'm sure they made plenty of money, and I got a reasonable deal.

I was most concerned with whether or not the thing would shoot straight, that would determine if I had purchased a decent base for a project or made a mistake.

I ran up to the range at lunch today and slung a few rounds downrange. Seems to shoot just fine, nothing keyholing, groups are in the 3-4" range rested off the mag. Seems fine to me.

So yeah, I've already ordered up a bayonet and front sight block from Polytech, now I've just got to track down a lower handguard, grip, and stock for it. Polytech has the handguard and grip, but that's $300 or so, a bit spendy. Given that it's just a run-of-the-mill MAK-90, I may just be patient and wait for the PSA spiker furniture to come back into stock. Idk.

That at least looks like one of the imports that had threads turned down, so it will limit what you will be able to do with that muzzle.
Bubba's enlightened engineering probably wont help. You may have trouble getting that FSB off.

Yeah, the muzzle measures just a couple thou below .550, like .548 or so. The only thing I really want to put on there is a thread protector nut like this, it'll never be a suppressor host. I may just grab a die and see what happens.

How did they get the optic attached to the dust cover? Duct tape?

So I’ve gotten this thing back to decent condition. I did pick up the lower handguard and stock from the poster above. Unfortunately the stock isn’t an actual Chinese stock, but it’ll do for now until I find one for a price I’m willing to pay.

I’m also missing the correct grip, but again, I’m not ready to drop $100-120 on a pistol grip just yet, so this FDE Magpul grip I had around will do stand in for awhile.

I’m pretty happy with how this turned out so far. I did pick up a second Mak90 that’s more complete and in better overall shape, so I’m going to build that one into a spiker and keep this one as a shooter.

I'm impressed now. I wasn't hopeful but you proved me wrong. That's better than decent.
