My buddy’s wife asked me to organize a range day (yay private property!) for her husband’s birthday festivities. I took the opportunity to build a portable rimfire shooting gallery using some of the ideas in my head and online. I built a prototype and then a second “slightly improved” version.
Mostly 2x4s (96”) Folding A frame with 2 beams. Top beam has glued wooden clothes pins to hold clay pigeons, lower beam has folding extensions and is flat to hold whatever you want. In my case a holder for golf balls and steel plate “knock down” duckies. And both beams have multiple short sections of lightweight chain attached to hang empty tin cans (or cheap sodas if I want more of a “reactive” albeit messy target).
Fairly cheap bang for the buck and not too difficult to repair/rebuild as the boards get chewed up.
Materials list:
2x4 qty:8
2x2 qty: 1 (drilled multiple shallow holes with a 3/4 paddle bit to make perched for old golf balls
1/2” x 4 carriage bolts qty: 2
1/2” x 3 carriage bolts qty: 2
1/2” nuts, lock washers, qty: 4
1/2” flat washers: qty: 2
Lightweight double loop chain: 15ft
Wooden clothes pins
Wood glue
2 2/2” and 3” wood screws
Handful of finishing nails (counter sunk)
Restock with clay pigeons, Tim cans, old golf balls etc.
We’ll set this up in front of their hillside berm and have fun with our 22s.
Hope to let his kids try it out.
