There's a gently used one at one of my weekend stops and the more I look at the thing, the more I like it.
BUT, yeah there's always a caveat, the magazine release is WAY forward, unless you have 7 inch fingers, and the bolt will not close on an empty chamber with an empty magazine in the mag well.
Now, the ups to it are the rifling is 1/8, and the barrels a hair over the 16 inch mark.
The magazine release issue can be fixed with the MAGPUL American Hunter stock that replaces the out of reach AR style stock release with an AICS style paddle.
My use for the rifle is basically bolt action SPR, light (relatively), handy, and accurate.
Anyone else here own one of these?
Just trying to talk myself into another rifle I guess, LOL

Grab it if it's a fair price and you want a totable carbine.

It's a bolt gun that can make use of standard AR-15 magazines. How fast does one really need to do a mag change on a bolt action .223/5.56?

It can take a 30-40 or a drum 50 rounder if ammo count matters. Most folks I know run a 20 rounder max and a 5-10 round magazine in .223 bolt gun is quite handy. It's the wrong tool for suppressive fire from the start.

It is sold to be a light, agile, handy carbine that uses readily available ammo and magazines.

The Magpul stock is nice for sure but it adds a ton of weight.

I have an RAR in .308 but the old rotary mag version. It's supremely accurate for an 18" barreled carbine and easy to tote. Adding the Magpul would give more options for cheap magazines and would probably shrink the groups a bit. But it would up the weight so much, I would never grab it again....

I have a RAR chambered in 300blk and I love it. It has been my go to deer rifle for the past 3 seasons and has never let me down. Ruger just released a gen 2 model you may want to wait and see if you can find someone selling a gen 1 to upgrade. Relatively speaking if “a lot” of gen 1s flood the market the price on them should go down. I plan to buy more calibers as I find deals.

I own Ruger American rifles in 7.62x39 and 223 (the 22 inch predator model). Both are in magpul STANAG stocks. these rifles are excellent shooters and well built. Recommend. Just plan on upgrading the OEM stock to the magpul.

regarding the bolt closure, mine will not close on magpul mags but for whatever reason it will close with my 10 rd lancer mags. it has to do with the shape of the follower. honestly one could probably file the rear of follower on a magpul mag to get bolt to push the follower down during closing. It is obviously relevant if want to single load rounds.

the magpul stock does add some weight, but it also allows me to get a proper sling setup thus making it much easier to carry either slung over chest or back.

Op. Carv a half moon over the mag release, easier to get at.

Back file the mag follower to close the bolt.

³6 seconds for each job.

Boyds stock will be dead weight and covered in flaws straight out of the box. Boyds ar Trigger guard is about as strong as newspaper. Stay with the factory stock set.

Factory stock is too long for 80% of humanity but can be trimmed

Solid wonderful rifle though.

I have a gunsmith thread or 2 on them here somewhere.
