Picked up a Ruger mark II bull barrel and some "smith" did something strange.

It has internal threads at the muzzle for some reason?

Why?

It has marks where they put in in a drill press vise I presume. It is fairly crude to my eye. Maybe not even concentric.

The good news is it still shoots great looks like they actually recrowned it. But it's super strange to me why it would even be done?

How should I fix it?

Pics forthcoming.

Having real issues with getting a good focused picture

Won’t cost you any more to have it cut back and threaded than to just have it threaded. Or leave it if you don’t plan to add a muzzle device.

Easier fix. If it shoots good leave it alone.
It does. It just looks super weird. I kind of forgot the serial number is on the barrel assembly not the grip frame or I would just change barrels.

It's also one of those things. I know it's there and it bugs me lol

Does the seller have the adapter that was probably made for it? I’d ask…

Internal threads may indicate attachment of some sort of blank firing device.

I think it was more for "off the shelf" filters rather than anything of substance.

My pics are coming out horrible. But I'm trying

Thinking about it, finding someone to put it on a lathe and just turn it back to the new crown should be cheap. Someone on here has a metal lathe, I no longer do.

Yeah. It should be. If I had access to a lathe. I'm capable of eliminating the weirdness and even moving the front sight back and re-centering and drilling the screw.

This thread is half curiosity and half "anyone west of Asheville able to fix it". At the moment.

My camera is refusing to focus. But I will get pics in the op when I do lol

I would buy a complete upper from Tac Solutions - search pac light upper - for about $250 you can install a super nice lighter weight upper with a new barrel
I kinda had that plan. But initial research turned up $400+?

Involving an FFL is annoying but worth it at around $250. Have a link?

I suspect it accepts a double threaded tube that allows for attachment of an oil filter type device, as someone else mentioned.
You could fashion a threaded plug to fill it in. But. If it shoots great...

I'm thinking a lawn mower muffler.

If it bothers you that bad, I'll take it and you won't have to look at it.

I'll go with the adapter thing too
I know there are some places that will do that exact trick for people that don't want to have to move the sights back to get a threaded barrel. Just drill out a bit, then make an adapter that has threads at both ends.

Huh?

how do you thread the end of that barrel without having to remove the sights, recontour the muzzle, and reinstall the sights about 3/4" back? you don't.
so you bore out a half inch or so, recrown the inside. Then you cut threads in the hole you just drilled. Now you can put in an adapter that is threaded on both ends. One end holds the adapter to the barrel, the other end holds whatever suppressor, brake, comp, etc you want.
something like this

It won't work for every barrel, but it will work for some where traditional threading won't.

Can you make a cast of the threads since you’re limited to a 1998 flip phone for pictures?

With major and minor diameters and pitch we can figure out what fits. Just a swag, I’d try an airplane liquor bottle.

I have never used this website - i just did a quick google search. Do not know if they are legit or not

They are very legit. Lee is the original gangster of rimfire racegun stuff.

Hey I like my potato phone🤣

Like a cast with soft lead?

As far as I've gotten is a 1/2"-20 will thead 1 1/2-2 theads then stop after I got the lead and crud out. I haven't had time to swing by a shop or anything to try other stuff.

I’d just force a soft dowel rod into it rather than actually casting. Precision is not required, just trying to get into the ballpark.

Would also take it to home depot and try it with the 1/2, 14mm and 15mm pipe threads in plumbing. If it’s close to 20tpi is isn’t a normal soda bottle.
