Any worthwhile upgrades?

What ammo ? Steel case? brass? For accuracy and reliability?

Never had one but thinking about it.

Thanks

if any plans on running berdan primed steel case ammo, the mini 30 is a guaranteed problem child. it has short firing pin extrusion. Some will claim a heavier hammer spring can help with ignition but it doesn’t fully fix the issue. There are “fixes” and workarounds to enhance firing pin extrusion, which may create unsafe situations with softer primers. the other problem with the mini series are the awful barrels. These rifles are not accurate. they’re also stupid expensive for what they are.

a much better option is the Ruger american ranch 7.62x39. Mine is very accurate and will reliably run any ammo. It’s also compatible with the magpul STANAG stock which swaps to STANAG 7.62x39 mags instead of the pricey mini 30 mags.

I'd heard they fixed that with newer ones that have a beefier mount to the action.
Gun store rumor?

what mount to action? The barreled action locks in via trigger guard. the mini 30 would be one of the most disappointing $1k rifle purchases ever. Once the barrel warms up it will pattern, not group. and I’m not being dramatic. I do appreciate the mini 14 which has its own diseases, but the mini 30 has even more.

so short answer is “gun store rumor”

So if I bid on one on gunbroker, forgot about it,and then won it (far less than a grand) , what should be my next move? 😂

When they could be had for $400 they were great rifles, as long as you had brass ammo. At their current prices, just buy an AK. It's actually easier to slap optics on an AK than a Mini these days, which is saying something. Mine was never terribly accurate, but I loved the look so I forgave it.

Well the winner on gunbroker is obligated to purchase it, so you're proud owner of a mini 30. As much as I have disparaged the mini, it is historically cool from perspective of Jim Sullivan, Bill Ruger and the need for a smaller chambering replacement to the M14. Also most of what I have learned has come from problematic firearms, so from that perspective the mini series are great for learning. It is from the perspective of function and value that they are abject failures. Unfortunately function and value are usually the two main reasons one acquires a defensive tool.

You'll also need hiking boots to retrieve the brass that comes to rest in an adjacent county.

It's always nice to get another data point so if you are able to run rounds through it and share with the forum that is appreciated from my end.

Since on the topic of mini's, in 2018 I sent a mini 14 to Carl at Accuracy Systems in Byers CO. He "accurized" this mini 14 and completely transformed it into a legitimate "varmint" rifle, not that I know jack squat about varminting. For approx $1k one gets a new barrel and totally accurized rifle. My package was around $1600 total. His work is actually very good value. Regardless it brings the cost of the rifle to at least $2k. Is that worth the cost? For me it was worth seeing his work and I am impressed. However I could have put together an LMR MARS or LWRC rifle for the same amount of cash...a fact I dilligently ignore.

People seem to have good luck with those barrel stiffener add-ons that make it look sort of like an M1

I had one on a 582 series Mini 14 for some time. It definitely helped group size once the barrel got hot. Cold bore shots I didn't notice any improvement. Just threw it on the scale and it adds 5 oz to the nose of an already nose-heavy rifle. That was the most annoying aspect to me. However it does provide more heat draw and stability to the barrel. If one is primarily shooting prone or off a bench it is probably worth the $120+. If anyone wants one for cheap I'm happy to list it in the classifieds.

Well of course I went and got it this morning. Not going to tarnish my perfect gb reputation 😂. I hated to drive to Winston Salem to get it but $24 in gas beats $75 in shipping and transfer fee.

As a bonus I got to see a tesla get popped by the SHP outside of Winston.

My old 99 Avalon surprised me by averaging 32mpg on the highway trip.

Is there anything left of the original rifle?
