i was in the long range shooting game for a while , and quit because of the expense.....sold all my "bench guns" but have a lot of 6 br brass, powder, bullets.

I was thinking of building a rifle for hunting (6-7lbs) from a 243 if I found a cheap donor rifle.....so what do you think, love to find a cheap used rifle in Remington (because acc. would be easy to find) then Savage, Ruger.

I think the 6br will serve me well as a deer-groundhog rig, low recoil and very accurate.

I can't attest to accuracy, not at distance, but as far as cheap, the Marlin XS7 can be had for $240 from CDNN. I bought my daughter's X7 for $200 and my new Ruger American for $200.

Is that too cheap?

I was thinking the same. I have an xl7 and xs7 both shoot great. I have a Ruger American too and it’s great.

What kind of work is "your guy" doing to it?

I guess the decision to re-chamber could depend on a few factors...
- Does the factory barrel contour have enough "meat" to cut down and re-chamber and re-thread?
- What's the twist rate on the factory barrel? You might be limited with your bullet selection using a factory twist (1:9 ??)

I know you've already made your decision, but you could always look into a "match" barrel from these guys chambered in 6BR.
