I have a question about barrels. I currently have suppressors sitting in jail. It probably wont be until next year they’re released. I have a savage axis ii in a couple calibers. Has anyone replaced the barrels on them for threaded barrels or would I be wasting my time and just get a new gun.

Depends on your preferences. does the axis check some box that’s important? Such as a Lightweight hunting rig?

If my goal was to run a budget rifle suppressed, I’d try to keep the budget as low as possible. Why not have the barrel threaded? That’s probably going to be the cheapest path and still sort of expensive considering it’s like a $350 rifle. Also what’s the OEM barrel profile? If it’s a sporter light barrel it might not excel with a 16+ ounce can. Also mirage can be bigger issue with light barrel due to less heat draw.

in short, it really comes down to what priorities the rifle is trying to meet then it’s easier to suggest some options.

Savage barrel swaps are pretty easy. Makes me wish I hadn't sold my LH SA in 308

I'd just spend the $100 and get the current barrel threaded if its lower round count, unless you're already planning on upgrading to a nicer prefit.

Barrel swaps with simple tools and relatively ease. Need head space gauges (at least a go, can make it a no go with tape). Can always buy one threaded or have yours done.

I was thinking of buying a new threaded barrel. I have watched videos and seems to be a flip of a coin if threading my current sporter barrel would hold up. As said above the thin walls and putting a can on it would make it weaker.
I don't have any attachment to the gun just was trying to think of budget friendly ways to add the suppressor.

1st, there is nothing cheap in the NFA world unless you own a machine shop. It's just lighting $100 bills for fun.
2nd, while you could thread your pencil barrel for $130ish, it is a pencil barrel in the end and POI is most likely to change from off to on as you hang 12-16oz of material on the end of that twig. Also, the mirage is going to be a PITA after round 3 on that light of a barrel. If it is one shot hunting, you'll be ok with the mirage.
3rd, Savages are easy to change with their nut system, but you need, a barrel vise or some vice with padding, the barrel with nut ($500ish), the nut wrench to match the style of your barrel nut ($20-30), and go/no go gauges ($60-80) for your caliber. With all those items, its less than an hour of work.

I'm a rem guy but I've built 2 guns using the remage system which is the savage nut style on a Remington thread taper. They were heavier tapers and no POI with my Omega can.

If you want the least POI change for the cheapest, sell that and buy one with a thicker barrel, 110 Savage, Bagara, used rem 700 SPS.
