SCAMS - You need to read this!!!!!

Recently, one of our members got bit here on the forum and is likely out some real money. Avoiding this requires us all to work together.

When someone applies to join CFF, the moderators are only able to make a few checks. Many are rejected but some get through because there is nothing to raise suspicion. With the increased interest in firearms, there’s been a significant increase in membership. Some want to actively participate, some are just looking to sell or buy and occasionally there’s a scammer or someone wanting to compete with our Vendors without contributing.

Just because someone’s new to CFF doesn’t mean they’re a scammer. But, you should be prudent before sending money to one who joined yesterday or to a third party recommended by someone who joined yesterday. Someone who joined the forum years ago, has many posts/likes, is a Supporting Member and has numerous positive trades (all of which you can see from their profile) is probably a safe bet. Someone with none of that should make you wonder. This is one reason we try to “welcome” new members and suggest they introduce themselves. The scammers have nothing to say. There are also plenty of members who’ve been here awhile but have never posted. They could be good people or scammers waiting to pounce.

In this recent case, a new member immediately began sending numerous PMs after scanning the Wanted thread. The messages were something like, “Contact [email protected]. He has that Python you’re looking for.” Many of you reported these PMs as potential scams and we banned the new member immediately. Unfortunately, one of us was already well on the path to losing money.

What can you do?

Report anything suspicious. At the bottom of every post, every PM, there’s a Report icon. The entire staff sees each report and every one is discussed. You may not hear back but your report has been reviewed and action taken if necessary (such as banning an obvious scammer). The sooner we know about an issue, the sooner we can/will deal with it.

Be suspicious. Someone who joined yesterday, has zero posts and sends you a PM offering something magical should be suspect. There are no NIB Colt Pythons for $1,000.

Ask a Moderator. We care about the CFF family and will do our best to help. A friend called me a couple months ago about a similar deal, through another forum. I asked him why anyone would sell that gun at the offered price, assuming the condition was truly as shown in the photos he received. Because I’m a bit more computer savvy, I Googled the email address and found reports of scams. I also found the identical photos elsewhere on the net. His call to me saved him from a big loss. He was disappointed but still had his money.

Think a hundred times before sending money, without any recourse, to someone you don’t know and can’t check up on. You can Google the email, you can check any physical address on Google Earth, etc.

We’re all in this together.
I hate a thief with a passion.

Bump. Guys, please, please, don’t send anyone anything before you have the money. Especially a new member with zero posts

I hate posts like this... kinda makes me think someone sent somethin' to a new member with zero posts afore gettin' the money...

I’d never send a picture of my ID for any amount of money. Obviously, Your experiences differs from mine.
The best thread in scamorama (baiting scammers) were the pics of some guy in Nigeria with a fish on his head. or a person standing in the airport with a sign looking for Irving Felch with a carboard sign that read "I Felch" Some of them were amazing 419 scam baiters.

Are there cashiers check scams going on? I’ve got a guy in Florida trying to buy my gun(Springfield Saint Victor pistol) from me and he’s offering payment in the form of cashiers check…

On what bank? Can you agree with him that you will ship ONLY after you go to a branch of his bank and receive cash.

Let me check, I honestly just saw cashiers check and him wanting my gun paying asking price without any questions except what shipping charges were from my ffl to his.

“I will mail a certified bank cashier check for payment and once the bank posts the funds which usually doesn't take more than a day. It will be clear for sure. So send me your name, full address, final asking price and mobile number to mail the bank cashier check, It should take 2-3 working days”

That’s what he texted me ☝🏼

I got a guy to send 4 scam cashier checks once. Kept telling him I never got them. Tell him a personal check is good, you just need to wait till it clears.

This is false on the time. It takes 7-10 days or more for fake cashier checks to show up b/c of the antiquated system in the federal reserve for these things.

I’d ask your bank whether they are any conditions under which “a certified bank cashier check” (whatever that is) could be deposited into your account and subsequently the funds being clawed back. By the way, he plans to mail the “bank cashier check” (notice the absence of “certified”) to your phone???? 🤔

Scccaaaammmmmm

Thank you guys, I haven’t heard anything back from him lol I appreciate y’all’s time🙏👊🏼🙏👊🏼

Offer to sell him the gun. have him send you the "checK' Then tell him you never got it. Get him to send you another one (he can print it up like he did the first one). Tell him he can "stop payment" on the first one for nothing. Then when you get the second one, tell him you deposited it (DON'T). Tell him you will mail him the gun as soon as the bank clears the funds. Then wait. Tell him you called the bank and they have a hold on the funds, but you anticipate them clearing it up soon. Then do nothing. Let him mail you again and tell him that the bank printed an ubiquiton wrong on the cashier's check (there is no such thing as a "ubiquiton"), but the bank says it can be resolved soon.
You can sometimes keep these clowns on the line for weeks.

For the record, cashiers checks, money orders, travelers checks are such hotspots for scams that you can almost NEVER get a foreign bank to cash them if you are out of the country.

Yea, seen them before as well, Bank will post funds in a day, then claw them back when check is denied by the “issuing bank”. I “might” ship is out cleared 30 days later…

This sounds like a giant pain in the ass to do but completely worth it to do to a scammer, is it ok to post his phone number? I told him I wouldn’t do it bc of all the scams with cashiers checks and all he said was “yeah” 🤦🏻‍♂️

Hey so another question, I’ve got a dude sending me a text from an email address about my AR pistol, not good right? I’m afraid if I answer his text he’ll somehow be able to access my phone…or is that a normal thing for iPhones?

I apologize if this is a stupid question

Anytime someone goes off-platform, especially right off the bat, it’s not a good sign.

Answering a text shouldn’t open you to vulnerabilities but don’t click on ANYTHING he sends you.

answering a text is safe. Like @Mathiew18 above says don't click on ANY attachment. Apple IOS is more secure than Android, but not by much.

With a legitimate Cashiers check there is no way to "claw back" the money. A Cashiers check or official check is not drawn off an individuals account. It is drawn off the bank or issuing financial institution. The money used to pay for the check must be cash or funds which are clear and available. That money is then used to purchase the Cashiers Check. When I was a banker I had to sign Official Checks all the time. Tellers has limits on their signing authority. I had a much higher level so anything like a car, boat, home purchase etc.... I had to sign them.

This is why there is no way to stop payment on a cashiers check. They can time out but there is no way to stop payment or pull back the funds. When you hear of a Cashiers Check not posting 99.999% of the time it was a fake check. When accepting one from an unknown party there are 2 approaches. First if it is a drawn on a bank with a local branch you can go into that branch and cash it at the counter. This is the best option. # 2 is to take it to your bank and cash it. These days the major banks have systems in place to verify official checks. The worst case scenario is that they up a hold on it. Do not ship any goods until the hold has been released.

Another point I would make is that these days all checks are local. They are cashed and cleared much faster than they used to be. Most checks will clear in 2 business days. It is all done electronically so processing is much faster. Holding a personal check for 5 business days is a good practice.

My advice to anyone and everyone is don't do business with someone you do not know or cannot verify with a 3rd party. No "deal" is worth the loss IMHO

Open a new savings account and have the buyer wire you the money. After you get it and the gun ships close the savings account.

I may have posted this before. I've bought quite a few guns off GB without any problems. I start by sending an email to the seller with a question about the firearm. Usually I get a name and on GB they usually have an address or store front of the seller. I then run their name and address through Google for whatever information I can find, and then go to Google Earth and check their address and get a street view if possible. Then I find out what county or municipality they reside in and check their tax records and see who owns the property (looking for a name match). So, without asking them for anything but a name I now know who they are, where they live, who their close family members are, status of any business, value of their property, and many times their phone number. Then I send another email asking if I could give them a call so I can discretely match their number and address and whatever else I can get out of them. It only takes a few minutes and I have actually bought several items from the same seller on GB. I call them and say hello and usually they remember me. There is a wealth of information available on the web on just about everyone and it only takes a few minutes to determine who (or what!) you are dealing with. If things don't match up to your satisfaction you simply move on.

Oh, just for fun, do these checks on yourself and see what information you can find out. You may be surprised.

Ask for a Postal Money Order.
Much harder to fake those, AND because it is technically counterfeit the Secret Cervix gets involved. Very few have crossed the SS and lived to tell the tale
There are lots of forged USPS Money Orders...

That piques my interest-
The Secret Cervix is RUTHLESS, they are like well dressed Terminators…
Why invoke their wrath?
How would I know???

But search for How to Recognize Forged Money Orders, and you will see that it is a widespread problem. It's likely done like other organized scammers, such that the folks making the big money are not traceable from the minions the might get caught.

Well, money orders are one thing, but US Postal money orders are technically US currency…
Just seems strange to me to invite that level of federal scrutiny
From my experience, the Postmaster General/USPS didn't give two shites.
During the time of Hussein OhBummer's reign and nicer AR's went unobtanium, I ordered a nice 6.5 Grendel from Loki. They'd been in several gun magazines via USPS money order.
The owner, Eric cashed mine and took from many folk and split the state. I gave all pertinent info to Postmaster General, the local Sheriff and DA. I contacted them monthly for almost a year. Nothing. The POS walked off with my $1K build deposit.

That's why my order fulfillment for Molly Mac Gear via USPS is self insured. Making a claim with the USPS is a total waste of time.
