Another failure by public schools and their leaders. I talked to someone this morning about how they were getting lunch delivered at work by the school. Everyone determines where the delivery is so they have never used free lunch because they didn’t qualify. But the lunch people is giving it to everyone so the workers at the business are getting a school lunch instead of the three kids who are eating at home or McDonalds. They told the driver it’s not needed after the second delivery but she never removed it.

At the same place a customer said they are not at home during the day so grandma is getting lunch free on the school system. Isn’t it nice how the public school system works?

While you see it as a gross failure, I see it as an amazing win, at least from my experience with it. Despite our views on the schools and the "fairness" of free lunch, there are a number of children who are food dependent on the school system. In fact, a major concern for many educators has been that school was a "safe" place for many of these children. They no longer have that, so at least they can retain some access to food if required. The food they are serving is often funded based on a contract that was already settled and the deliveries are going to come. So far better to serve the food to the community and children who need it rather than it just sitting in a school rotting until next year. Except then we would be complaining about the gross waste of the school system in letting it rot.

I have talked to some friends who have gone by to grab a lunch, and they are actually asking people to come, and to spread the word. They are limited to a few distribution sites, so for some its difficult to get to them, but if their volume drops then they will be restricted to even fewer sites which would mean less access to those who actually need it.

We can all gather around and start listing off the sins of the state and the evils of government...but adding "schools feeding people" is pretty darn far down on the list of things I think worthy of real complaint.

when I first started Volunteer work I had my eyes opened to just how Dependent some kids and family are to the school food program. It was calling for snow and a lot of kids were excited about the possibility of no school. And this one little dude that I have been working with was pretty upset, I asked him what was wrong and he said basically if school was closed, he & his sister wouldn’t eat breakfast or lunch...

That was a very eye-opening reality to the plight of homeless families and families and children in need in this country.

so I happily say feed them..

It is the responsibility of the parents to feed their kids. Can’t feed them don’t have them.

    I just ain’t buying it ....

You don't have to. They are being taken care of despite people with your attitude because it isn't their fault, nor should they be punished for it. And there are plenty of parents who were doing just fine before the country shut down. This doesn't just impact those who you deem worthy or unworthy of aid.

If you're paying taxes, you most certainly ARE buying it. Along with everyone else. Remember this is food that was already purchased and would be going to waste otherwise.

The solution is just to stop paying taxes. Let us know how that works out.

I'm not going to lie. I had a square pizza slice, 5 french fries, and a half of a pear half floating in sugar water...from a school a week ago. The pizza wasn't as glorious as I remember but that sugar soaked half a pear slice was on point.

No one, not a single person, in this thread or any thread stated that there were starving kids on every street corner.

The WS/FCS system has 30,000 kids who qualify for free lunch. Many of those are parents who were working and making ends meet the best they could...not the "don't breed em if you cant feed em" types. But honest hard working men and women doing their best.

I did a lot of time the past few weeks on those deliveries.
Im certain that a few of our meals were going to elderly folks. Hell, maybe even 'regular' adults (ie: not elderly). But that's such a small percentage
Ok, so some folks are ripping off the system for a few free meals. Bummer. But think of the other 99% who really need it (kids) and they get to keep eating.

Easy to talk crap when youve not seen it.
Look at some of the places these meals are getting delivered to, some are very rough/poor.
Or, you know, keep talking about the failure it is

I am one of the most die-hard libertarian minded folks you'll ever run across. My license plate reads "LBRTY".

But...when it comes to kids I'll gladly fund the schools to feed the whole damn county if it means kids don't go hungry. I see that as a true and proper role of government.

The point was they aren’t even getting it to kids and don’t even care to rectify it. They’re lazy and just going thru motions dumping food off at the wrong places. As for the distribution sites that’s not correct. They are running buses almost door to door here. And if it’s about waste then add meals for unemployed parents of needy kids. You missed the whole point and created your own narrative.

I’m am 100% on the wavelength as you on this one. HOWEVER... since my wife is a teacher, I’ve been exposed to some of these sweet and/or innocent children who’s parents completely fail them. Some much worse than others. Punishing the kids for the actions of their shitty parents isn’t right.

If we had a good way to punish the parents for being shitty parents, or somehow holding them responsible for the burden that is passed on to tax payers, I’d be allllllll for it. In the meantime, I’m all for making sure these kids have food.

And yes, I understand that feeding these kids is essentially encouraging the parents’ bad behavior, but not giving the kids food just means they don’t eat, so which is better? Proving your point to a shitty parent and having a kid go hungry, or knowing that your tax dollars are indirectly benefitting a shitty parent and a kid is fed?

    (1) I'd MUCH rather see some people volunteer to distribute food before it expires and risk a few people taking advantage than let it waste and be good for nobody and nothing.

(2)I'm not a fan of most social programs.
But kids didn't ask to be born to parents who won't or can't feed them. and they're probably a lot less likely to become healthy productive members of society if they're getting starved.

I think we're ALL a little worried about what happens when people's meager savings run out, they're still out of work, and the $1200 check from uncle sugar is long gone. Yes, we're all worried about what the bad people might do...
But we're rapidly going to be facing the classic "is it wrong to steal a loaf of bread to feed starving kids" thought experiment, but for realsies. I can understand that even good people might do things they ordinarily wouldn't if it means keeping food in their babies' bellies.

Also, there's a little church up the way and every thursday they have had free lunch for anybody. Even before all this mess, their parking lot was always packed with cars parked up and down the street. Last week they converted to a drive-through lunch system. I've never seen so many cars on the road in the 6 months i've been living here. They were giving a free roll of toilet paper to each car too, which is nice because that stuff is still near impossible to find.

Honestly, I'm starting to feel a little bad because we have a fair supply of "the good toilet paper" before we have to break into the stuff we didn't like. And no shortage of food to speak of over here in my pantry. Wife is still buying fresh stuff when it's available, using that to prevent going into the canned/dried goods, making lots of soups and things that freeze well... We'll be coming out of virus season just in time for hurricane season, and we're pretty close to some flood lands.

No...they are getting it to kids. They have open distribution centers and people can come get food. They also deliver to people who request it. Whether they need it or not, the food otherwise would be going to waste because they aren’t feeding the hundreds of thousands of kids they normally feed per day.

No one has missed your point. Most of us just disagree with your take on the situation.

It’s technically the opposite of waste...the money was already spent for the food. If no one eats it >then< it is a waste.

people will debate that side of the issue until they’re blue in the face and never resolve a thing
Children aren’t asked to be brought into this world, but letting innocent children suffer and go hungry just because their parents are twats is not the answer.

this is great to hear. I’m a bit co fused on whether the system is being abused by people who shouldn’t be using it. If people are taking food from needy children, I would happily join a militia to stand guard at these distribution centers and cut the balls off anyone taking these kids food. If I’m misunderstanding something, disregard. If there’s anything I can do to help these kids, shoot me a PM.

Nah, they are actually asking people to come, regardless of their current status. They have a surplus of food and are trying to distribute it. At least in the areas I’ve heard from. The more people take advantage of the situation the better it is as it will keep it available for more areas longer.

Rutherford Co at one time was one of the most economically depressed counties in the US. It was at the top of list in the number of meth lab bust. Old mill houses liter the landscapes around the ruins of old cotton mills. In these houses are grandparents who are saddled with raising grandchildren on limited resources.

Several years ago I volunteered in a program where backpacks were loaded with food for the kids to eat over the weekend. You pick up clues on what living conditions are like. You smelled wood smoke on some. Kerosene on others.

It was sad that some of these kids were homeless. They lived in cars. At night while mom worked at a big box store they slept in the car. They moved from school to school as their living arrangements changed.

This back pack program wasn't only at the one school where I volunteered. It was county wide. We packed between 115 to 125 bags every week. It was a monumental task just to secure donations for the food.

There will always be those whose greed will always work to game any system. I know this. But in the end I'll let God sort out the greed vs need deal. Kids know that they are hungry and there is no food in the house. There is more childhood hunger than what you may believe.

bull crap! This food is not already bought. They do not have enough storage in the cafeteria kitchens. They are getting food truck deliveries weekly. So they could stop the trucks and money would be saved.
Now in regards to the kids getting the food I am not against the ones who truly need it since they can’t help who their parent/parents are.

It is a fact. It has been explained to you. But you are being too stubborn to accept the fact that some people need help during this odd time and it is often due to no fault of their own.

The hard >fact< is that 30,000 children in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County school system alone qualified and counted on the free lunch benefit they had to sign up for AND qualify for. Now multiply this by 100 counties, some larger and some smaller, and this is a large population of children who relied on school breakfasts and lunches. This isn’t a theory. It isn’t an idea. It isn’t an opinion. They are numbers.

So please, get off the “let em starve” bandwagon because you believe in some myth that there aren’t any kids out there that need help and the school distributing the food >they already allotted for them< is somehow a bad thing.

We can opine about dead beat parents and your determination of what that means elsewhere. But schools feeding kids is not a bad thing.

School systems don’t negotiate contracts on a week by week basis. The shipments come in weekly. The payments were budgeted months ago.

That may be correct but if you tell them not to deliver anymore you could write those savings into next years contract. It would also free up needed supplies for places that also need them. Especially paper goods which are in short supply at the places I order for as we try to keep our seniors safe in assisted living communities.

They aren’t distributing toilet paper. They are probably already receiving less in the standard deliveries, but they are still trying to serve the thousands of kids who signed up. Many of the kids need the food now, not next year.

It’s easy for many to sit back and just consider it as numbers on a spreadsheet, but once you actually get in there and meet the kids that need it the perception changes.

I understand and wasn’t saying that some of the kids didn’t need the food. I was just saying it would go to waste. Was just saying it’s not like it’s in a big warehouse and must be used. That was all I was saying. My wife is a teacher for a title one school so I have a little knowledge about it.
