Well, I screwed up. I was tightening the screw on the cylinder release for my .38 sp. Taurus revolver, and the head sheared right off the screw. I'm not sure of the exact model, and I'd really like to fix this as soon as I can. This might be a dumb question as I'm relatively new to firearms, but does anyone have a suggestion for the best way to deal with this? I was directed here by the shoutbox on the homepage

Pictures? And Depending on how bad it is I would drill it and either use a broker bolt extractor, or drill it all the way out and re thread it.

I don't believe it's a model 85 based on pictures I've seen, but I'm not entirely sure how to tell since I was given this gun by a family friend, and don't know its full history

I would cut the portion sticking out with a thin dremal cutting wheel and screw it out, slowly and carefully. If this is not something you are comfortable doing DONT, take it to any gun shop with a smith and have them do it.

Look under the crane and verify the model number first. Then try eBay or possibly gunpartscorp for the parts. You can also call Taurus. Depending on the model, they may have the part

It's a 5 shot, so certain to be same frame size as the 85. It's old, so the 720 screw should fit and very likely the side plate screws are the same thread if not the same length

Not all Taurus have model numbers on the crain or behind it, some are on the grip or under it and even in pencil on the back side of the wood panels.

Just from the pics it looks to me like an older model 85. When you do basic web search of taurus model 85 your probably seeing pics of new versions. But the 85 has been made for alot of years. Being an older model taurus the model number should be like said above on the crane when cylinder is folded out. It looks like there is enough sticking up to use a fine cutoff wheel to cut a shallow groove to be able remove with small flat head also like mentioned above.

Okay, so I got the screw out pretty quickly using a pair of good pliers. I checked the crane and, like you guys said, it was indeed an older model 85. Pictures to follow.

Thats a 85, just gotta order a replacement screw now man. Good job🤙

*Beautiful gun BTW😍
