Ok, so I went Friday and shot my HK SP5k for the first time.
This was, also, the first time Ive ever shot a roller lock gun

After shooting a hundred rounds or so through it, I picked up about 40 shells that had very distinct markings on them. I didnt pick up all that was there, just quite a few.
Anyway, I checked each one that I picked up - all were either Federal or Blazer, the two types of ammo that I brought with me to the range that day.

Is this normal for roller lock firearms?

I have never owned a roller-locked firearm, but your casings look exactly like the casings from the fluted chamber of the HK P7 I used to own.

Normal for the fluted chamber HK is fond of.

I've reloaded them, don't own so can't say if it shortens brass life at all.

As said, that's from the chamber fluting. I have given up reloading but I use to reload my P7 brass many times over and had no problems.

Thank you guys for the replies
As I said, this is my first, so I wanted to make sure all was ok with the gun.

Thanks!

Yep, normal. PTR (HK91 clone) does it to 308 cases too-

I hope it's okay that I piggyback on this topic, because I have been shooting some .38spl out of my Rossi 92 lever gun and noticed there are powder burns on the side of the cases, almost halfway down the shell... Does that mean it may have an issue? I can post pics tonight.

I would like to see those pics. In roller-lock designs the leaked gas is part of the extraction process.

Rem 22LR Subsonics are so under pressured they don't seal, 1/4 of the time blow flames out the ejection port and make a mess in a 10/22 & MKII/III. Instead of using a heavier bullet, they just use less of dirty powder.

@HMP, H&K uses a fluted chamber with their rolling block weapons. The reason for this is simply reliability, as it is much harder for it to become fouled to the point that you will get a failure to extract.

From what I have been told, it really doesn't effect reloading unless the case swelled into the grooves. Marked is fine, swollen is a no go.

You should see what 308 cases look like coming out of an HK 91 or PTR 91. Those can swell on the clean out grooves. But even if they don't, those rifles extract so violently that the deflector dents the case anyway.

Probably a non-issue, sooty cases are pretty common at the bottom end data of already comparatively low pressure pistol rounds, cases just aren't expanding to seal full length or fast enough to stop all the gas. I see it quite a bit in target 38Spl, 45Acp, 45C loads, usually lighter charges of medium to slow powders. You may eventually accumulate enough fouling to have feed issues if you go long enough between cleanings, can't say I ever have though.

I was about to say, those 308 cases are probably trashed beyond belief. Bulk pack surplus 7.62 would be my friend with that thing

I had some 308s that was shot in an HK with flute marks on the neck and could not get them resized.

Not the best pic, there is no case buldge, just powder burn. Shown from 5 angles, only on one side, in that one spot.

Much of my 10 mm brass came from MP5 years ago with a fluted chamber. Have had no issues.
