I'd like to get a new set of shooting rest / bags or rabbit ears. Use initially is going to be sighting in my new CZ 457 .22 and I hope to try to do some of the rimfire challenge stuff here on CFF, so no lead sled type setups. I do have a RPR .308 that I'll likely use with this at some point in the future but the .22 will get more duty. Planning for rifle use only and likely more from seated vs prone.

I haven't shot with these things before to know the advantages of a tripod-style shooting rest vs bags, although intellectually it looks a rest lets you have more controlled movement without shifting the entire setup vs a bag.

I've been primarily been looking through Midway at what they have, but not wed to their selection

A lot of the online review roundups have mainly the full frame stuff
And and old thread here https://carolinafirearmsforum.com/index.php?threads/shooting-rest-bags.45102/ as well as looking through the old rimfire challenge threads to see what folks are using.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and advice.

Doing some digging on what I see pictured in past rimfire challenge threads:

@Timfoilhat and @df0101 looks like they use a Caldwell Rock Deluxe shooting rest and rear bean bag

@ECNC looks like he uses a Caldwell Rock BR Competition Rifle rest

@Lucky63 and @Amps 13 looks like they use a Caldwell Rock Jr

@BigWaylon uses Caldwell Deadshot front and rear bags, used to use bipod

@nbkky71 uses not sure what rest this is? He mentions he had a Bald Eagle rest in other posts

Also what looks like a Protektor Rabbit Ear in a couple challenges

@mike59 uses Sinclair lightweight front and Protektor Rabbit rear

I didn't include those with bipod & rear bag. I'll also have a bipod but assume just from the physics of it that may have the potential to be (comparatively) slightly less accurate?

My rear bag is a Wiebad. Been happy with them and they have all kind of different purpose set ups & color/patterns.

I like the Crosstac Rear Squeeze. I have a Caldwell front and rear pair and upgraded to Crosstac. I find no advantage over the Caldwell for the front, but the rear squeeze is an improvement.

I've got 5 Protektors and 1 Edgewood. the Edgewood gets the most use for serious work.

Read this for bag filler comparisons. I run foundry sand so I can beat them into submission and they remain firm.

Cadillac front rest if you can find them. I have one and it is the el goodo.

Also have an older model Rock.

Write up:

I use the Caldwell Rock which for the price is decent. I have used other more expensive front rests that I did not own and there is a difference. But a huge price difference also. Like a thousand dollars or more. For rear when I use something it is a squeeze bag. Normally I curl my left hand/arm under.

Edgewood and Protektor make some nice products. Protektor used to offer some front/rear combos that would save a few dollars over buying them individually.

Thanks all, ended up ordering the Caldwell Rock BR Competition and Protektor Rabbit Ear Rear bag. Natchez had a great sale price on the Rock plus a $20 off deal for a couple of days.

Finally found time to get everything assembled, filled and set up!

Using an inserted CZ 25 round magazine just hits the back foot of the rock, but I could offset just a little or raise front and elevate the back a bit.

oh and @BigWaylon i finally found the fauxlencer. (ps I know better than to keep it on or shoot with it, just for setup testing)
