Many know that double bbl shotguns often come with a safety that automatically engages when you load and close the gun.

I took out the transfer bar on 3 Berettas in the past - yesterday modified my new-to-me Stoeger coach gun by just shortening the transfer rod 1/8"

Not a huge deal but you wouldn't believe how often even experienced shooters forget to flip this off after reloading every single time . . .

Safety still works manually 100% so no concerns.

Some doubles have a three position safety that allow the shooter to defeat the automatic function by placing it in the appropriate position.

I like the auto safety feature. I was taught to check the safety on a shotgun for what seems like once every 5 minutes. And you only take the safety off when you raise the gun to your shoulder, in one smooth motion. No reason to have the safety off until you are shooting. Good habits are wonderful things.

@Jmoser you have a point about pumps and semi-autos not returning to safe after firing or loading. Not sure if the link below will work, but it’s a good example of some people should have them.

Edit to add: can’t get the link to work. Short version, guy with a double rifle preparing for a safari hunt. When the timer goes off, he picks up the double, closes the action with his finger on the trigger and the gun fires as soon as the action closes. Recoil almost takes the gun out of his hands.
