France's Alamo, and never should have happened (the should have just let Vietnam become independent and be done with them). I have Fall's Hell in a Very Small Place: The Siege of Dien Bien Phu, excellent book about the battle.

The French got their asses handed to them at that place.
I will have to check out that book.
 
I rewatched a documentary on the siege yesterday.
The number of VC killed was like 5 times more than that of the French. They just kept coming.
 
Makes me wonder why we (the US) think we're any better at colonizing than the rest of the world.

French failed in Vietnam, we immediately tried to take over.
Russians failed in Afghan, we tried to take over.

It's almost as if these people don't want our benevolence, eh?
