Signal

Pant Suit Nominee, aka Zero for Two, Hilary Clinton recommends Snapchat. ;)

I used to use Signal. But, there were some features I needed that didn't work right, like group text. May look at it again. I just recently found out it does secure calling as well.

In a related thought, someone was recently arrested for plotting something. The news article said they were using a secure communication program to coordinate the plot and they had details. Think about that for a min.

Signal can do group texts

I'm using discord. I have a group chat with 9 people on it that text would lock up and not send the messages to some people for a few days and then hit them with all of them. These 9 people are all over the country too

The Southern President

We used it for group chats/communicating with the home front while I was deployed.
Functioned just fine.

The group text function has been improved and even has administrator functions to “secure” it. The secure voice is rather good and I didn’t notice ant sound quality degradation.

Still, I’d only use it for mundane functions.

I just reloaded it as my default and I see you popped up as a user. At some point we talked or texted a couple of years ago.

Just to clarify for others, it was a couple of years ago, I used Signal and it worked overall, but some of the bells and whistles weren't quite right yet. I'm remembering a picture issue as well. Anyway, I'm back on and I knew I would be at some point. I think it's needed now. We'll see.

It’s been a while, but you and I used to chat periodically, mostly by text. We were also both in the same ham circle and had met in person a few times, though, well, it’s been a while. You were on my contacts list until my phone went to pieces on Hwy 421.

Speaking of ham. I think I need to dust off the gear and get some antennas up. I had some ideas on how alternative comms could be structured to maximize coverage, including those without. Meanwhile, we need to think about phone trees.

Would be interested in your thought. There are several of us in Chatham Co in Auxcomm and we’re finding out how difficult it is to have area wide comms without infrastructure or a radio repeater. NVIS on 75m covers most of us, but there are a few in the skip zones.

Everyone on this site should be using signal. Your text messages are not encrypted and can be read or turned over to any authorities
Another nice feature of signal is that YOU can set how long before YOUR messages delete on the recipients phone.

Are we talking about "Signal Private Messenger" in Gargle Ploy Store (on android)? I may give it a try.

I also use proton mail. It is encrypted and housed in Switzerland so they cannot get the data from them.

Something I found out earlier this year due to deployment:
Once signal is activated, you can change your number, or even shut it off completely then turn on with different number months later, and signal still functions as long as you use the same phone.
If you get a new number and subsequently a new phone, you have to reactivate the app and reconnect with your contacts.

+1 for Signal. I've used it a few years now. Only a few friends it so I get limited benefits. Perhaps now is a good time to try and convince them.
The voice chat feature was flaky when I tried it a year ago.

Voice calls worked beautifully from the Middle East. I talked to wifey twice weekly from there.
Edited to add: timeframe for that was the last calender year. Jan '19 until Dec '20

Edward Snowden uses Signal. If that is the endorsement you need to know the security of it.

With the assault by big tech we have to be secured in our communications.

Just fyi...its authorized by DoD for servicemembers in the warzones, too, due to its encryption.

So does it work if the other person isn't using signal? I'm guessing not.

You can send a message through the app inviting them to download it and join
But, to your actual question, both have to have it, yes.

Ok, so I sent a few messages, some to Signal-ers and some ot old msg app-ers. I set Signal as default msg app, now android app doesn't work.

Any tips? Do I have to set Messages as my default app & use Signal as a side line?

Hm. Ok, as long as Messages is default app, I can use both. If Signal is default, Messages is dead in water. (For now; let's call this the New App Learning Curve)

Just installed. Looks good.
