My kids used to like to read the spin off novels from Star Trek and Star Wars. One of them contained a story about a "Stupid Gun". The crew happened across a deserted planet that had an array of high tech large scale weapons. One of them was a gun, labeled STUPID GUN! with warnings of DO NOT FIRE!. Apparently, it was designed as a global range weapon that fired a powerful bolt of energy that would skip through the atmosphere, following the curvature of the planet to it's target, but if not aimed carefully, the bolt would circumnavigate the globe and kill the operator.
The nazis just had an addiction to R&D
