Getting ready to expand our chicken pen and combine the 2 pens into one. Found this "little" guy while moving the remains of a palm tree that fell over behind the coop a while back. He's a little dusty... moved him and covered him back up. Wikipedia says spotted salamander.

That's neat. It has been a very long time since I have seen one in person. When I was a kid we would see them all the time when we were camping.

It's been a week of different things;
The salamander-
2 nights ago I was sitting near the pens after it had gotten dark and a huge owl flew over just in front of me. Although I have heard them over the past few years, it's the first I've seen since we moved in 11 years ago.

That is the state salamander of South Carolina.
North Carolina State Salamander is the Marbled Salamander.

Bumping this up with a "heard" component- heard this bird tonight for the second time. First time was last night, wife and I were corralling a rebellious chicken- close and loud.
Tonight, there were several of them- you can hear them faintly at the beginning of the video, a single bird more clearly at the end.
What is it? I'm thinking owl ...

The Milamor is unique in the way it calls. It sticks its head in the ground, whistles through its butt, and you can hear it a mile or more.
I've had nights like that.............about an hour after eating at Los Amigos.

I was picking up some old cardboard targets a little salamander like thing scurried out into the tall grass. i would have like to get a better look.
also, yesterday, my wife said there was a geko in the pool. geko is her generic word for any kind of lizard. it was a juvenile 5lined skink. I honestly didn't know they could swim like alligators, but that's what he did when he saw me reaching. He was tired though. i scooped him up and put him on the part of the pool deck where i saw one that looked exactly like him was wandering around the other day.

after that intro, and with your video making me turn up the sound, I am almost disappointed I didn't hear a "duck". almost.

I’ve heard those before, both here in Pender County and in at New River state park near West Jefferson. I have not been able to find out what makes the call. I tend to hear it more in the fall as it cools down.

edit: Just noticed Downeast’s reply. I’ve seen them all my life and never realized they were the ones responsible for that call. I’d only heard them scream or so I thought.

THAT is a milamor bird... rarely seen in this part or the state. Awesome catch.

Don’t forget to tip your waitress. 😁
Sound like President Biden, talking out his butt.

We found a small five-lined skink caught in a spider web on the back porch this morning. I doubt the spider could have handled it, but it was pretty well worn out from its struggles to get out of the sticky web. I got it free, and it immediately ran up under the siding on the house. I hope it doesn't find its way inside, because I know my wife's attitude would quickly change from "oh, it's caught, help it" to something a bit less charitable.

Looks like a match to me!
21 years ago i took a class on the diversity of mammals that included preparing animal cadavers for display as skeletons and identification based on unique morphology.
I honestly never thought knowing how to look at A bone and link it to a critter would ever come in handy for me.

This baby rattler was killed less than 22 hrs earlier . Ants have been nibbling all day ( likely about 11hrs). Wild at URE
