My son will be 1 next month. I'd like to buy him a youth model 22. Looking for recommendations. Thanks!

It's for when he's bigger. Just wanted to start his collection now. Been looking at the Cz scout.

Ruger 8334. It's the optic ready with oversized bolt handle and threaded barrel. Plenty of time to also buy a suppressor, scope, and the compact stock module.

My son was more like 10 or so when I got him a Marlin 795.

That doesn't help, I know.
The 795. Still one of my favorites. Great rifle, cheap.

With all the young-uns we get out here shooting, the single biggest issue..and they all have it..is the reach from the grip to the trigger. Their fingers are too short, and up till they get around 10 years old or so, it's a problem. They invariably need assistance.
Don't get them an adult rifle, or even what's considered an acceptable youth model like the Marlin 60. The Cricket that Coltdefender1911 mentions is a good choice and made for small hands, and the rifle is inexpensive. Yeah they'll outgrow it, but it'll take years and maybe someday they can pass it down to their kids.

Savage Rascal. It is in all ways a "real" rifle. Single shot, bolt action .22. Very accurate.

Unlike the Cricket, the bolt action on the Rascal is fully functional...there is no "plunger" thing at the back that invites the kid to wave the gun around while trying to manipulate the cocking mechanism.

Follow through with that purchase and you will NOT be disappointed. For 2017 CZ is releasing a 455 Scout with a threaded barrel, and since it is a 455 you can swap barrels & calibers. You should also be able to put the barreled action into a full sized stock once he is adult sized. The rifle will be able to grow with him. It will come with a single shot adapter but also take 452/455 5 and 10 round magazines. It's a win-win just about any way you look at it in my book.

That is a good plan. Can't go wrong with a CZ. Bolt action would be good for his first one too.

So, he's 11 months old? I hear ya... Start 'em off early...
Everyone needs to start their collection sometime! I know he's young and won't be shooting it for a long time. I've got room in the safe and doesn't every little boy need a rifle? lol I'm sure he will rather play with the box anyways lol

Chinese AK,,,,,If that doesn't work just go with a Marlin 60 and he will have a rifle to last a lifetime.
That would be awesome! lol Maybe a 100 rd drum mag too?

I already have a Spectre II on a trust that I'll be adding him to once he's an adult. But who knows I might need another! lol

Why stop with a rifle?
I'd give it a couple months, and then start shopping for a Yamaha PW50 motorcycle. Getting this past the wife will be harder than a gun trust me.
But you'll be the coolest Dad evar. Bread & butter, Guns & motorcycles. Some things are just meant to be. :D

I vote Ruger 10/22. Gotta help Snal~ stock shares...lol

Just really depends on what you are starting for him. Lifelong gun collection---10/22
Something he can learn to shoot with---Cricket or savage.

I never had one but I handled them many times and sold a good few. Just a great little rifle all round. I still need one for my car emergency game gun, because the peep sight and general handling made the short stock the only negative for a 6'2" walrus bloke. And I'm pretty sure I could shoot it at the factory size.

I'm 6'4" and bust clays with it every time I take the boys out. It would be near perfect as an emergency game rifle.

Exactly what I said first time I touched one. The decent sights, the Savage barrel, the low, low weight. You can even get it in hardwood.

Here's ours. You forgot the Accu-Trigger.

I'm a little biased because I love Marlins but I would find him a bolt action Marlin, an older one. They are very well made, accurate, durable and the bolt action part will teach him to actually shoot and take his time on each shot.

Got my son a Browning BL-22 Micro for his 1st birthday, it's a neat little youth lever gun and something he can hopefully pass down to his kids someday. Now he's 3 and all he talked about for Christmas was a "real blue gun" after seeing a Savage Rascal at the gun show, so Santa brought him one. I figure the Rascal will be better for learning anyway.

I forgot to add that I learned to shoot a rifle on my great grandfathers, bolt action 22. We've still got it, still shoot it and it still looks good. It will also wear out a quarter at 50 yards with any ammo, it gets better with stuff it likes.

Well I decided to order a Savage Rascal for him to begin with and perhaps I will get the CZ too. Thanks guys!

Another vote for the Savage Rascal. Later on the CZ Trainer. Then a Marlin 66. The Marlin 66 is the best value in the .22 rimfire world (for full size folks).

My 11 y/o little girl hasn't been able to shoot any rifle well. Even the youth models were either to long or heavy (she's short like her mamma). I got her a Ruger Charger with a red dot for Xmas. FINALLY!. Went to the range yesterday...find the dot and put that on the target, then press the trigger. She smoked through 600rds in about 2 hours. Ive been trying to get that kid shooting with me for 5 years. She was hitting a 6 inch shootnsee target at 25 yards with little effort. I never understood the purpose of a Charger...until yesterday.

That's great! Your little girl's smile is so delightful, that it's put a smile on my face.

A Cricket was my first rifle when I was just a wee lad, and I loved it. It was single shot which made it great for when I was first learning fundamentals
