Staffing crisis means Durham police officers sometimes told not to enforce laws

Likely folks out of the Macdougall Terrace housing project. They all need to be shut down. Too bad the rich libs in Durham, Cary and Chapel Hill will never walk the walk and pony up for housing support that might actually work (e.g. Habitat for Humanity, Self Help Credit Union) rather than dumping tens of millions of tax dollars into substandard housing that allows violent criminals to concentrate where they can hide amongst (and terrorize) the innocent majority.

ETA: And one more thing. If anyone from your household commits any crime like this, the whole 'family' should lose any access to subsidized housing anywhere in NC. No amount of police can ever make up for the lack of self policing in these criminal subcultures (of ANY race, color or creed).

Yes, that's exactly where it was.

I was a medic back in the Few Gardens days, they razed it and built Macdougall Terrace. Good example of you can't paint a turd red and call it a hotdog... instead of trying to fix the problems, they just built nicer projects. Few Gardens was a NYC-like housing project, cops, fire, and EMS were routinely shot upon. The only place in Durham I didn't feel safe.

I used to ride with my buddy delivering pizzas when it was few gardens. We took a order there and by the time he dropped the pizza off and got back in the car, we were surrounded by people screaming and banging on the windows asking for free pizza and money. Buddy had 2-12"subwoofers in his trunk so he turned on some rap music and cranked it up. Everyone immediately started dancing and cheering and we peeled out of there like we had just robbed a bank. He looked at me and said "it works everytime"

Wow, I didn't realize it was that bad. Definitely a good day when that place got scraped to the slabs, but obviously the government morons got to rinse and repeat.

Two are dead and four others are shot, all juveniles, after an early morning shooting off of Eugene Street in Durham.

Right in the middle of the Devil’s circle … even LEO’s try to not go in there without another unit or two …

And therein lies my issue with the whole Durham-is-the-wild-west crowd: McDougald Terrace, NCCU, Driver Street, Hyde Park, these are places you just don't go to. Take out those 10 or so square blocks, Durham doesn't have a problem with shootings. You know how many people get shot downtown? Or tossed, mugged, assaulted? None.

Or maybe it's just me. I am just not scared.

And possibly the majority of other “problems” reside in that circle and go to other parts of Durham to do their crap (break-ins, robbery, car theft, etc) … kinda like a dog don’t like to crap in his own yard.

Roxboro road has become a little sketchy. I've never had a problem around there personally but i know some who have. Also friends mom got mugged leaving a bulls game couple years back. They have worked at getting downtown under control. Anything by central is a no go for the people i care about. Not much reason to go there anyways

I'm not scared, but I see the containment failing. Diver/Hyde problems have crossed 70 along Holloway to Lynn. Southpoint is apparently no longer "neutral territory".

Apparently a “car club” shut down I-40 Saturday night between Paige Rd. and 540 doing donuts, burnouts and the like..
I-40..resulting in 2 arrests..that’ll show em🤨

Glad my daughter got thru grad school at NCCU alive. And my neighbor law school. That area was on lockdown almost weekly plus the murders in the area. Kudos for both for sticking it out. Kept me awake at night.

As long as the drawdown in police is accompanied by a decrease in court hearings and an increase in coroner hirings I'm fine with it.

On the way home from work tonight I watched a FayPD car light up a car. once the cop put it in PARK after following the car to the side of the road... the car rabbited, flipped a U, and floored it.
The cop started to follow, but soon fell back and cut off the lights.
I found another cop at a gas station and asked if they got the guy... and wound up having a nice long chat about the new rules the FPD has to work under. No high speed chases is one of the rules. Cop told me the dept is down by over 100 badges. I told him I completely understand people not wanting to work under the conditions of people hating them and popping shots at unexpected times. He told me it wasn't actually the job that was turning folks away, but more the conditions they do it in, that their hands are tied in most cases, and the criminals have caught on and know what they can do to get away all the time.
I mentioned where I work, and he looked at me like i'm the crazy one... they're quite familiar with us these days, and just responded to a bomb threat on sunday morning. different protocal than our usual calls about guns being flashed and people throwing a wild punch on their way out the door....

Anyway, I still don't like cops... but he seemed like one of the good ones.

Where did they all go? Were they all on the edge of retirement and just walked away, or move to other places and still be a cop elsewhere, or did they all become uber drivers? I can't imagine the type of person that becomes a cop would be happy to sit back at home and collect their biden bucks.

he wasn't real clear, but since a lot of FPD has a military background, some have gone into private work. I know my cousin was on a special team for FPD before contractors snatched him up a lot of years ago.

WRAL and others want to paint it as related to COVID and cops leaving because of the economy. They are leaving because of city leadership. Interestingly, the sheriff's department isn't nearly as dire.
Depends on the sheriff's department...

Don't give the average cop any undue credit. Same as folks in the military... It's just a job to many. Most aren't gun people, and a great many are liberals...
