I've been wanting to take this class for a long time.

Edit to add some info

Class Description:

Many churches have taken comfort in the thought that “it could never happen here.” But headlines and a steadily-growing body of statistical evidence demonstrate that violence in faith-based organizations is not an if, but a when.

This course will educate you on recognizing behavioral pre-cursors because knowing someone's body language is many times a sign of nefarious intentions or actions to come. Also, the behavioral indicators of armed individuals whether they are lawfully armed or unlawfully armed will be covered in great detail.

A review of statistics and trends of crimes against churches since 2007 is conducted, and the justification of safety & security within the church complete with biblical authority is reviewed and discussed. A de-brief of several in-progress crimes against persons at churches and church events for lessons learned and historical trends are covered as well.

A discussion and practical training block on “the art of the handshake” and the “technique” of the handshake will be presented. Discussion and demonstration on distancing and closing strategies for those approaching and evaluating potentially armed individuals, in a welcoming and hospitable manner, so that the church mission is not compromised will be presented as well.

Additionally, this course provides strategies for de-escalating conflict from a verbal point of view and covers what phrases and language to avoid to prevent a conflict from escalating. An overview of lockdown procedures for both “THREAT INSIDE” and “THREAT OUTSIDE” lockdown of a church facility as well as protocols for what to do when “lockdown fails” will be taught, should verbal de-escalation not be an option.

Not trying to be negative and I know nothing about Strategos other than what's listed but for a single-day event and the topics being discussed the price for covering the basics seems a bit high. There are a number of Sherrif/ Police departments that actually will come and speak to your church some have a slide show going into decent detail covering all of the topics above but also addressing it from a local perspective for FREE! As well as many other firearm/training groups within the state.

Two topics specifically not mentioned as being addressed is child protection/ access, and care which absolutely must be a top priority and covered. As well as legal responsibility and insurance coverage/ overall liability. NC is a bit weird in several areas of law pertaining to security and there are some specific topics when discussing the use of force (liability/ responsibility/ insurance) conversations that you should be aware of that pertain to NC how your church security team is set up and the direction it operates. There is also no mention of vetting volunteers, responsibility policy/description, security plan write-ups, emergency scripts, or safety checks/ briefs..... I'm in no way discounting the class or course above as I have not attended or know exactly what will or won't be discussed. Due to the lack of information and discussion among key people within many churches, I'm sure it would be greatly & highly valuable if nothing else to open doors and start the dialog.

*IF active shooters/shootings is the primary motive for assembling or starting a security team, you are setting yourself up for failure*

A lot of the material you mention is covered in the other half of their basic two-day class, but logistics being what they are, we started with one day. And this is not an active shooter class.

In my experience, Strategos's cost for a full day class is pretty low. Like you, I don't want to be negative, but I kind of think when you ask for a free presentation from the local sheriff's office, you're likely to get what you paid for.

Edit: here's the other half of their two-day class. I hope to be able to host this one in the Triad area before too long:

Church Security Planning for Leadership

At the end of the day, you’ll be thoroughly equipped to begin (or re-launch/improve) your church security ministry. Each participant will leave with a comprehensive, practical 75-page workbook.

Who should attend:

  • Pastors
  • Church Staff
  • Church Administrators
  • Facility Managers
  • Children and Student Ministry Directors
  • Security Team Members
  • Deacons
We’ll address key topics including:

  • Intruder response
  • Lockdown
  • Offering collection, protection, and transport
  • Nursery security
  • Medical response
  • Volunteer selection
  • Armed vs. unarmed security
  • Protecting the pastor
  • The role of ushers and greeters

Should add: I'm not affiliated with Strategos, apart from being an uncompensated local organizer. (I will be a full paying student in this class...they offer free seats to the sponsor, but I "gave" mine to the host location.) I arranged for Strategos to come here rather than someone else because they have a legit national reputation for this stuff.

Couldn't agree more - Thanks for sharing the additional information.

I only mention the rest because many people don't know the laws and legality as well as the local assets/ tools that might actually have a more valuable plan or perspective that would be in a position to help. I'd only caution people from outside the state because while Church safety and security is a generic topic there are some laws/ regulations that are NC-specific and if you don't know them or aren't aware you're indirectly setting yourself up for legal action depending on your security team. It's also valuable to know your local area/ responding emergency personnel will respond and in what ways they can assist you. Something many churches neglect.

Looking forward to reading your review after the class!

Yeah, that's a great point...these local issues are important to think about. I think you and I are coming from a similar mindset. A lot of "church security" classes are really just active shooter classes, and while active shooters do exist, the likelihood of one coming into your church is so incredibly low that it shouldn't be the main focus of your church security thinking. I'm not against active shooter training, and have taken a few classes on it myself. But I didn't want to do a church security class that was so myopic. There are vastly more likely kinds of things that we should be thinking about. And that includes the unsexy stuff like insurance issues or emergency response.
Looking forward to reading your review after the class!
I will definitely write up an AAR afterwards.
