sometimes when I'm shooting my sled won't kick back when it's empty. It has did it with diffrent mags and is doesn't happen all the time. What ya think
VP9 with factory mags

Park you strong hand thumb (the thumb to the right in the picture) on top of your support hand thumb. I had the same trouble with multiple striker fired pistols until I started doing this. I was pinning or riding the slide stop.

I don't think so,, sometimes it won't lock back when I'm hand cycling it
My turn for a dumb question...do you have a mag in it?

I just did a quick little google search, and I did find a couple users on other forums who reported they had the same issue but it wasnt their grip. They were able to isolate the issue to a single magazine. They then swapped internals around to see if it was an out of spec follower, but the issue followed the mag body around. They called HK and HK sent them a new mag, problem solved.
Kinda weird to me that it was a mag body issue, but hey...it might be worth you looking in this direction, too.

I had a Kahr mag where the follower couldn't extend all the way to the top in the fully extended position when the mag was empty. I could hold it up next to another mag and see the follower was about 1/16 lower in the mag body. I had to tweak the feed lips on the mag body.

Oh, and squishy mag springs that need replacing can have the same effect.

When my EDC was a 226, the manual said the recoil spring was designed for 147gr. loads and if you absolutely had to shoot lighter loads and experienced malfunctions, a lighter recoil spring was the solution.

Does it happen when you shoot weak, I assume left, hand only?

H&K recommends NATO and other "hot" ammo. But that doesn't solve the issue he has with hand cycling the slide. Sounds like a problem I had with an M&P Bodyguard.

I'll try to explain how I diagnosed the problem with my gun.

  • Empty magazine in the gun
  • Cycle the slide until it actually does lock itself back
  • Look down to the top of the magazine and check how good is the contact between the slide lock tab and the small horizontal ledge on the left front corner of the magazine's follower.

In my case, the magazine apparently didn't sit properly in the center of the magazine well. Instead of the slide lock tab sitting square on the follower ledge, it would just barely catch the edge of it. More often than not, it wouldn't catch the follower at all. Instead, it would scrape the vertical side of that ledge on the follower eventually wearing down the ledge which just exasperated the problem. After replacing all the relevant parts, the factory eventually admitted the gun was unrepairable.

If this isn't clear, I'll try to post some photos.

That’s the best step by step diagnostics of this problem I’ve seen read.

Dremel time?
