I'm looking to buy a new rifle as an incentive at the end of this semester. I have a budget of around $1000 up to $1500 total. The only issue is I like to build up whatever I get so it's mine and not just a stock model. I've looked at getting a M1A with the Sage International Chassis, that's gonna get up around $2000 after optics and everything. I'm also looking to build a precision bolt action but that's gonna be pushing $2000 as well because I don't want to buy anything cheap that I'll regret. As they say "buy once, cry once". Finally, I've been eying up the FDE Tavor in 300 BLK. Nobody seems to want to get rid of one of these so I'd have to buy new, which is at least $1700.

So, any suggestions as to what I can build?

Current collection:
- Semi-auto .22
- 12 ga Mossberg
- AR-15 that I built
- Savage 30-06 that I'm gonna sell whenever I start the precision build

Well, I am not a big Freedom Group fan nor do I like the looks of the new Remington PCR (looks don’t make it shoot better though) for a street price around $1k you get a nice start on a budget precision setup ... a decent barrel with 5R rifling, solid Magpul PRS stock, an aluminum chassis system and a boat load of possible aftermarket upgrading being a 700 base.

For $1,500 you could build a wicked nice AR with a $500 optic like an MRO.

Edit. I need more info. How much "building" do you want to do, or do you mean customizing? Are you open to used parts? What will the gun be intended to do? If the answer to all of the above is "it depends" or "IDK", then see my first sentence of the post.

Do you have an AR already? If not, I would consider a nice factory AR like BCM or DD. If you went BCM you would probably have enough left over to get an optic like a MRO as well. You can always add parts to the rifles to make them more "yours" as you go.

I'd 100% agree with this. Factory BCM rifle for $1200 and then your $400 MRO.

On a bolt action, I'd probably be doing more customization than building. I liked assembling the AR because now I have an understanding of how it works, but with a bolt action I might just be better off buying a barreled action for accuracy's sake. I'm open to used parts as long as it doesn't impact the overall performance of the gun. I plan to use it mainly for target shooting, 100-300 usually with the potential for longer distances if I can find a range or a friend with more land than I do.

Precision ....sell the savage
What brands are good as far as bolt actions are concerned? I've toyed with the idea of buying a barreled action and then buying the parts I want. The Howa 1500 seems to be one of the only barreled actions I can find.

Yup, built one a couple of years ago.

I have no idea about barreled actions for a bolt rifle...... however the action itself can be had. IIRC,... Brownells, Buds, I know The Gun Store in Lexington used to keep a couple of actions in stock. For something affordable and decent..... Remington 700, Savage 10 or 11 (can't remember the model numbers, or the CZ 550 or 557 or whatever they call it now.

From a cost perspective....... It's probably cheaper to buy a rifle and build as you go. You might could find 700 with a decent stock and the XMark Pro Trigger (The 5R model comes to mind)..... or the cheapest 700 you can find in the caliber you want or a matching boltface and go go from there. The Savage 10 or 11 would be a good rifle to start with also. The CZ 550/557 is decent, but I don't know about aftermarket support.... however I think HS Precision makes some stocks for CZ.

If your Savage is a model 10 or 11...... I would build on that....... 30-06 is a good round.

Howa, Tikka, etc.... I dunno, there are some people than are happy with them, but I have 0 experience with them.

I got a nice 700 in that price range, hard to find, if going bolt route. PM me

Either rebarrel your Savage (not hard to do with that barrel nut system) or build yourself a AR10. Either way you should be way under budget.

CD

I would build a Ar 10 in 6.5 creedmoor. Can build a nice one for under $1000. Can get a complete one from PSA for around $650. Add a good trigger for $200. You still got around the $600 range for mount and optics. Just my 2¢.

Well, if you want a great looking M1A that is accurate and easy to maintain, get the Precision with the Archangel stock. Mine is stupid accurate right out of the box. Ammo matters of course! But it is under your budget, and you should be able to stay under budget scoping it, mine has a Leupold VX-R 4-12x44 with firedot and is just plain fun to shoot!
If you are going to go AR, and you want hard hitting, get one in either 458SOCOM, 375SOCOM or if you don't mind having to use proprietary mags, the 450Bushmaster. But you might be stretching your budget a bit, Rock River Arms makes a complete rifle that is very reasonable and accurate. You can go Tromix page and go to town customizing!
Bottom line, lots of choices!
Here's a pic of my M1A:
