Posted last week about wanting to get back in to hog hunting in the Wheelgun forum and was looking for a 44 revolver and 44 rifle to recreate a combo I had used and loved back in the 80s. Ended up picking up a Colt Anaconda which I'm having issues with in the wheelgun forum. But as for the rifle, I'm very pleased.

I DID NOT want a Henry. I had previously owned one Henry and it was a horrible experience. The only 44 lever action I could find new in my area though was a Henry Big Boy Side Gate 44 with the large lever loop and 20" barrel. It's a H012 I think. I bought it hesitantly remembering my experience with the Golden Boy 22.

I can safely say now after taking it out to shoot three times now that this is by far my favorite rifle out of all of the rifles that I own. The sights out of the box were dead on from the first shot at 50 yds. Perfectly centered on target and about an inch high. Moved out to 100 yds still dead on center but the 1" high at 50yds was now dead center in the bullseye. I have never shot a rifle straight out of the box that was as spot on as this rifle with no adjustment. It has had zero malfunctions unlike its little brother the GB 22. This rifle is just fun to shoot. I'm honestly thinking about ditching all of my modern sporting rifles. There isn't much I can think of that this rifle could not do. It is much more powerful than my 223's and almost knocks my steel target stand completely over. I just don't know what to say, I'm loving this rifle.

If I had to pick one issue with this rifle it would be that my old eyes have trouble with the Buckhorn sights. Mainly it's focusing on the small brass bead on the front sight. I rectified that issue by installing an unused Vortex Sparc 2 that was laying around in the back of my safe. The Sparc was dead on when installed on the rifle and didn't need a single click of adjustment either. I thought it was accurate with the iron sights but it's amazing with the Sparc. I owe Henry an apology for all the junk I talked about them for the lackluster performance of my GB 22. I LOVE this rifle. I took my son in law to shoot it today and he was so impressed with it he's buying one this weekend lol. It's just that fun to shoot. My SIL commented on what a great shooting rifle it was and also just how fun it was to shoot.

I have shot my AR 500 steel targets with 223, 7.62 x 39, and 308 rifle calibers with no damage what so ever to the target. This 44 makes "moon craters" in the steel target. Im pretty amazed with that. I sure as hell wouldnt want to get hit with that lol.20230713_152335.jpg

Oh man, getting a good one is such a great feeling. I’m glad you got a good one, especially after not getting a good one with the Anaconda.

I know what you mean. I've been NEEDING a good one. I had set out to get a 4" S&W 629 when I saw the Anaconda. I had an Anaconda back in 1989 ish and remembered loving it so I bought the new Anaconda for nostalga. Paid $500 more than the 629 to boot. Still kicking myself in the a$$ for that one.

On a brighter note, the new Anaconda grips got here today and feel much better in my hand. The new sights will be here Monday. Then I'm heading back to the range to shoot it again. Hoping this will solve my issues with the revolver. You shouldn't have to put $200 worth of sights on a brand new $1600 pistol but those Colt sights were just poor design. I've heard nothing but high praise for the Wilson Combat Anaconda sights. We will see.
