One of the suspects involved in vandalism at the Christopher Columbus statue in Elmwood Avenue is a teacher at Pawtucket Public Schools who is now out on leave pending an investigation, according to the superintendent.

Derrick Garforth, 34, was charged with desecration of grave/monument, which is a felony.
Superintendent of the Pawtucket School Department, Dr. Cheryl McWilliams, told ABC6 News, “I have just learned about this and the School Department is investigating it.”

Around 1:30 a.m., on Saturday morning detectives noticed a man and woman getting out of a car and running across Elmwood Avenue towards Columbus square. The two began to splatter paint on the boarded up monument, according to police.

Both then fled across Elmwood Avenue towards Lexington Avenue.

Detectives saw both suspects enter the rear lot of the Feinstein School heading towards Ontario St. Detectives quickly drove to Ontario Street and were able to catch up to both suspects as they exited the lot.

Derrick Garforth, 34, and Charlotte Whittingham, 28, were both arrested.

Well Christopher Columbus was a racist so.....

... and he killed an innocent black man

... and a transphobe

... and a bigot

Whatever. These idiots are going to burn down the entire country then come crying to the adults for help.

can felons be school teachers? I can see how that might be a problem

I wouldn’t think that sort of vandalism would be a felony
I mean.. the second sentence of Cowboy's original post says it was a felony, and he pulled it straight from the article. but you could be right.

They hardly teach history at all anyway. Ask any of these knuckleheads who the Taino are.

Dude ought to never be able to set foot in a school again. And I say that as someone who thinks we ought to replace Columbus statues with Leif Erikson.

Dont blame teachers for kids not remembering things. Also, when was last time you were in a history classroom?

90% of the teachers I know act like the students they teach 180 days a year. Childish and radical. Not all of them but highly liberal and childish in actions. The other 10% get looked down on by their peers. I am not one bit surprised it was a teacher.

Somehow I knew you'd come along shortly. History's fought teach and hold a kid's attention. I had one teacher in HD that was great. His day one intro was, "I wasn't to be here a lot less than you, so if you don't want to be here, leava and I don't fill out, or turn in absent reports.
As a tuned out, usually high kid I signed up for his class a second year, the stories held your attention.
My sons and I really enjoy history podcasts now, especially Martyr Made by Darryl Cooper. 'Fear and Loathing in the New Jerusalem' was https://www.martyrmade.com/
Danieli Bolelli is a hoot to listen to as well.

Of course, it's my life.

What you speak of is what lured me to history and how I try to do it myself - anecdotes and stories. Thankfully now we have so many visuals that we can use to help with the stories.

Storytelling is powerful, especially if you're gifted in having your audience feel what is was like to live through it.

In my opinion, the key is making it relatable. I can tell them the definition of appeasement all day, some will get it. OR I can give the example of their little sibling throwing a temper tantrum and the parents giving in and giving them what they want just so they'll shut up. And then the sibling does it again, and again and again etc

I had one history teacher who was great. He would do a "Connections" type lesson with all the little things that eventually led to what we have now.

Dude, you’ve been here long enough to know...

I know I know
But I have to ask that question, even though I know the answer.
Im so over folks 'knowing' what happens in a classroom/high school when they probably visit once a year max and it's meet-the-teacher night...
"Well I read on facebook that..." lol

Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History is worth paying for. Or you can test drive the free stuff first. Down side is some are LOOOOOOONG. 4-5 episodes, 15+ hours on some of them. But incredibly well done. I listen to them at work while I drive.

I’ve heard all of them on apple podcast, just finished listening to his latest one. His forced drama voice is a bit grating.

Canada lover. :p

I'm interested in history, not math. Math is racist.
i keep hearing this, but the entire world has agreed upon using arabic numerals. No matter where you come from or what your demographics are, 2+2=4 and a^2+b^2=c^2.
