"Night vision is the only super power you can buy." I am ready to "identify" as superhuman!!!! I have looked around the forum, but best I can tell we don't have a tactial helmet pic thread here at CFF. Please post up what your running with a brief description of your rig!!!

I have been pulling a lot of extra duty moonlighting to get into the helmet mounted Nigh Vision + COMs game. To me the force multiplication of a good helmet with some sort of NVG and reliable Coms is a real advantage. I am in LEO but am not on SWAT or anything where I have access to these kind of tools, so I am on my own. I am still in the money saving phase working hard for the $$$ but I am motivated to have good gear to train with and use and am willing to work the brutal hours it takes to get there. I know there are guys on this forum who are old hat (see what I did there) at this and I would love to see the rigs the CFF members have come up with.

Personally, as a first move, I am leaning heavily towards a bump helmet with thermals. Currently, I am open to recommendations on a good bump chassis so long as it is compatible with the Wilcox g24. As HMTs go, the product that has the most appeal for me is the N-Vision NOX 18. Thermal is a HUGE investment for me and will require a lot of extra duty and side hustle to acquire. However, for my situation, a versatile thermal offers capabilities that are more desirable than conventional light intensification NVGs. On a purchase of this nature and $$$ amount I am only interested in USA made products and will gladly put in the time to earn the cash necessary to buy quality US products. The Iray RH25 was on my radar, but for the same money it's looking like I can have a superior thermal for the money, comparable capability and keep my 6K in the states. I like the ability to have HMT that can also pull double duty mounted on a weapon. In the future, I may pair this with a standard PVS-14. I know most folks go NVG (light intesification) then thermal, but I will be going thermals first.

Show me your rigs!!! Hopefully in time I will show you mine!!!

I have an ops core bump helmet and an ops core high cut helmet. The bump helmet is purely for when I jump and for riding around in a tactical vehicle. I wore NODs once with them and found it to be very uncomfortable without a battery pack or weight in the back. My ballistic helmet currently has an agilite cover and amp arms with the axl rac link so I can use peltors. I will try to get an updated picture of the helmets in the next day or two when I am back at the house.

At work (Mil) I see a lot of ops core, team wendy, and hard head veteran bump helmets but the ballistic helmets all tend to be ops core.

First, thank you for your service!!!
and for the reply...I was getting kinda lonely out here in helmet world. I though a helmet rig show and tell would have gotten more traffic. Standing by for pics with bated breath,,,sounds pretty dope!

I may be able to snag an "out of date" ballistic helmet at the office when new helmets come in. They are probably like our vests and have to be swapped out by date. If that pans out I will roll with what I get and maybe upgrade the padding/harness. Otherwise its probably a bump with the battery pack as ballast. Optics are the priority the other accoutrements will have to wait, but I'll get there.

I have an ‘el cheapo bump helmet that I got off Amazon for $70. I use it purely to mount a PVS-14 for LARPing and Run-n-Guns. Not worried about ballistic protection or whacking my head jumping out of perfectly good aircraft. It’s the single most UNcomfortable thing I’ve ever put on my noggin.

I don’t work in any “tactical” environment, but I do travel to Detroit on occasions. Considering an upgrade simply for comfort.

20220913_005708.jpg20220913_194116.jpgI have not had a chance to get an updated photo yet but that was the ops core ballistic helmet when I had the unity mounts for it before getting the amp arms.

I do feel like helmets tend to be over looked compared to belts, carries, and chest rigs. Unless you rock nods or do something with vehicles it can be hard to justify the cost of the helmets.

I didn't know you were SF....

When I was a Game warden, we used to arrest people that were out at night with a lot less than that. All they had was a spot light and a rifle or shotgun.

Nope, just like gear and following rule number one of always look good doing it. I just happened to have been in a unit that allowed me to get stuff.

Larp on Tim...Larp on. You may be able to find a padding kit that will help you get that thing a little more secure!!! And yes,,,Detroit is probably to be considered a "tactical environment" at this point.

FWIW, that pic is my 13yo helping carry gear in after last weekend’s match.

I have one. I need to get it adjusted properly

Proper adjustment is BST or garbage can, imho of course.

No matter the brand, adjustment or counter balance, I hate them.

I’ve got a Team Wendy and an Ops Core. I run NVGs off the Team Wendy. Both are Coyote.

I have an old standard cut ACH medium and a large head. Does anyone know if the neckband(or regular) ComTac Vs will fit under it? Doesn't seem like there would be any way to make it work without removing the padding inside the helmet. If not, are earplugs the only option?
When I used my ACH I got two more of the oval pads and removed the crown pad. The two oval pads replaced the crown pad with an open strip in the middle to run the headband for the comtacs so it did not squeeze onto my head.

Does anyone have something like a noobs guide to NVG's? I'd like to at least buy a mountable monocular so I can wave at the local skinwalkers but all these gens, autogating, phosphating, blah blah blah...

Is there like a S&W M&P Sport of the NVG world?

This thread might help a bit.

Regardless of the helmet, a set of 4D pads is the best money you can spend. Silly that a set of pads can make this much difference but, they’re worth every penny.

I saw a guy on youtube named 7F Prepped who did a "cold weather series" that discussed a Team Wendy Bump set up he has improved over the years. He eventually upgraded to the 4D padding and was very happy with it. Looks plush!!! Thanks for the info. Here is a link to his video for anyone lurking on this thread for ideas on set ups.

Yes. Plush is a great descriptor for 4D pads.

The longest I’ve worn my OpsCore bump with the 4D pads is 6-7 hours straight. The helmet was comfortable the whole time (with bino nvgs and counterweight).

Before the 4Ds, the stock OpsCore pads started to produce hot spots after an hour or so. For me, the helmet began to be uncomfortable after ~90 minutes and really unwearable by the two-hour point. YMMV
