This piece is from the left tail light of a 2004 330i.

What is it called and can they be bought online or at a brick and mortar parts store?

Well to state the obvious.....it's a light (or lamp) module. I'm guessing that the big connector hooks to the harness and the small one to the light assy?

Does it have a part number on it anywhere?

I couldn't find anywhere at Rock Auto

No part number on it, but since you say that, it was sticky taped to another piece. I pulled them apart. Ill have to check the piece I pulled it from to see if it has a PN.

Thanks for the jolt.

Knowing the Europeans, it's probably some complicated microprocessor to turn the lights on and off so that they can control it with software rather than a simple flasher unit....

A coffee fueled search this morning (as opposed to the beer fueled search last night) tells me this is a resistor for the aftermarket tails that were on the car when I bought it. I still don't know if the resistors are OE or not, but the manufacturer of the lights doesn't sell them individually. I have found a place that has built there own version, but the are OOS.

The search continues.

Does it now have LED lights, when they were incandescent from factory.

Correct. They are Eagle Eye LEDs. They were on the car when I bought it used.

Most auto part stores sell resistors for led lights now. They will not look the same and you will have to wire them in but you can do it. That is also probably a module to keep your lamp out indicator from going crazy with the leds.

Don't laugh...but the Service Department at dealerships can help you with this.

Doesn't mean you have to buy the product from them...but if you take it in and talk to them about it, they'll be able to look it up.

They are aftermarket tail lights. The dealer has no clue.

My wife when we were dating had a Toyota celica. It started leaking coolant up around the fuel injectors. I went down to the Toyota place and talked to the parts guy. He had no idea what I was talking about! I had to take him outside to a used one they had and show him what it looked like. We came back in and he looked it up...on a micro phish! He told me, " I've got good news and bad news." The Good was he could get one, it was in Japan, but he could get it. The bad was it was $500! That was a bunch of $ in 1987 money! I went home, took it off, saw were it was leaking, went to NAPA and bought some 3/8 brake line and some epoxy. I pulled the old rusted thru nipple off and cut some brake line, cleaned it , epoxyed it and pressed it in with a vise. It worked so well, I did the other 3 nipples while I had it out. Saved $500 with less than $5 worth or parts!
