I've been casually looking for a new car for the last few weeks but most of the used market seemed outrageously priced. I'd really like to buy a manual V8 before they becomes thing of the past, so I've been considering a 5.0 Mustang. I happened to look at a local Ford dealer tonight and noticed they have a new barebones GT in Oxford White for ~$39K (only $20 in options 😂).

My wife doesn't like the idea because we have a 4 and 7 year old and a two door coupe may be a pain (though she still has her Accord). I grew up with my dad driving an old two door coupe, so I know it wouldn't the end of the world. I'd likely be selling my current car (2013 Mazdaspeed3) to justify the purchase.

I'd also be more than happy with the 450 HP, so wouldn't have a constant urge to modify it which is a plus.

What does the hive mind say? Worth driving into or keep driving my old turbo econohatch?

Reactions: Me.
I love the body style, and I love a Coyote V8. I have one in my truck.

If you can fit between the seat bolsters ( I can’t) and the wife won’t give you anything more than the stink eye, I’d buy one in a heart beat. And I love white cars.

That’s as much or more horespower than GT 350’s and GT 500s back in the day.

The first thing I see would be cost fuel … 93 octane @ 18 or so mpg combined (if you drive nicely) vs what you’re spending now in the econohatch. I don’t know what 2 more year of Slo Joe will be doing to gas prices but I would guess not coming down. There would likely be an insurance premium difference also … especially if you don’t drive nicely.

Sorry, 5 years back I wouldn’t be thinking economy but now … stuff is getting more and more expensive and a 2013 MazdaSpeed3 ain’t a bad way to get around. If it’s not giving you problems and repair bills … with two youngins I just can’t see spending the money.

If you have 40K to waste, go for it!

If you want to send your kids to college and retire, keep the Mazda 😂

Go rent a muscle car from hertz for a weekend and get it out of your system

Good points. The Mazdaspeed3 also requires premium and gets an average of 24 MPG, so really not that different. I also work remotely 3 days a week, so that also cuts down on any potential pain. My wife also works 100% remote, so I could always use her fuel sipper if I needed to. The Mazda is getting up there in she and mileage and will likely need decent amount of maintenance soon (brakes, suspension, turbo eventually). It is, however, paid off and had been for years.

Sad, but true. Our joint income is like $180Kish and our mortgage is low since we bought little a decade ago. Only major expenses are my son's child care (which will eventually go away) and my wife's student loans (which will also go away soon). It wouldn't put me in the poor house or anything, but it is something I've been thinking about.

IMO, this is the level of purchase that requires the wife to be onboard. If truly the only issue is the 2 door coupe access, then that is not a reason to veto. If the reason has to do with finances, then I wouldn't do it.

The prices on used cars are falling rapidly, but I doubt they will fall much on niche/muscle cars.

Do what makes you happy. You are a family man, raising good kids, and unless the wife just hates the idea give yourself a luxury. The two door thing doesn’t effect you, just the kids, who by the way wouldn’t care if they rode in a cardboard box. Enjoy life a little if the financial part works. If you take care of that car it’s going to be a fun car when you get in your 60’s.

With your incomes that is not a big deal-gas, insurance, or whatever.

Yer harshin' our mellow here.

I had a 2004 Mustang SVT Cobra, factory supercharged, the most powerful Mustang they had ever made up to that year.
And a 2017 F150 with a 5.0 Coyote (pretty much the same engine as the 2017 Mustang GT)

At the same time. With two kids in college. ...and retired.

Edit: Looking back on it, I must have been out of my mind.
Fun while it lasted. Kept it less than a year.
The Cobra, that is. I’m still driving the truck.

I can say this, as someone who gets a whippersnapper in and out of a car seat regularly, unless you can depend on the kids to climb in and buckle themselves up, you’ll hate the back seat. There is not much room unless you have the front seats adjusted way forward. Even then it will likely be a PITA.

If I wanted it, and I could afford it, I'd go for it.

But I don't have a wife or kids to think about. Gotta keep the lady of the house happy. Try and get her on board before you sign the paperwork.

I don't have much experience with the new mustangs. I've got an old 03 GT, and if the back seats in the new one are anything like the older ones, they're a joke. Once your kids are tall enough to not need booster seats, you won't be hauling them around in the back. I'm 6' even and I can't sit in the back of my mustang, even with the passenger seat up as far as it goes. Not enough headroom for anyone over 5'3" or so. Not enough legroom for anyone with legs.

What he said^^^ about the back seat. My last one was the same bodystyle. I haven’t had in for 4-5 years and forgot how nonexistent the headroom really is.

If you can want it and can actually afford it, go for it.

...but you need your wife on board. Not because you need her permission but because you're a team.
Yeah, to be clear -- I won't be buying anything without her go-ahead. Finances aren't a concern, we could buy the vehicle outright today if we had to and she's already approved a new car, but she wants me to get something "big" 🤢.

With two small kids myself, I couldn’t imagine going to a Mustang. Is it possible, sure. But far from practical. I’d go the daily/beater + fun car route. Maybe grab the CRV in the BST for $6k as the daily.

Edit: nvm looks like he pulled it down, but I think something like that is the solution.

I'm not opposed to keep the MS3 was a DD. It's paid off and gets us around well enough. 🤷‍♂️

I'm going to join (or start) the Negative Nancy camp.

I say don't do it.

With the points you've offered up, the only positive I can get out of this is you can easily afford it. All else, to me, seems to go against it.

I "went for it" and all, in my earlier years, even with a wife, kids, mortgage, etc. I had a mustang, motorcycles, trucks, firearms, etc.

I became debt-free just before the Trump years, and now, in less than four weeks, at 54 years old, I'll be retiring.

You know how they say, "If I knew then, what I know now?" I absolutely see where that comes from. I definitely had fun with my toys, but if I would have applied my current mindset back then, not only would I be retiring, possibly sooner, but so would my wife. She'll continue working until I can start withdrawing from my accounts, penalty-free.

Now, if you love your job, or whatever it is you do, and your retirement plan and goals are on track, then maybe enjoy some of your money. I mean, we're not guaranteed tomorrow, which is also a factor in my decision to retire now.

You only live once...might as well enjoy it. Now that to you could be keeping the peace and making her happy....or it could be buying the car and enjoying the look she gives you everytime you drive it....to each his/her own.

My take on it is this if you wait for the 100% perfect/correct time to do anything the chances of it happening become less and less likely....no real perfect time to do anything adult related...wait to buy a house watch the market skyrocket...wait for the price to come down..it does because intrest rates are going up...wait to have kids you wind up 40 with toddlers....trade off in every direction.

This is also coming from the guy that bought a motorcycle on his wife's birthday....and also has an xwife. My joy was watching her face when I did something she "didn't approve of". I don't regret much of anything other than staying married to the x way to long.

These are the words I recall, VIVIDLY, in both my ’92 5.0, 5speed Foxbody, and my ’04 SVT Cobra.

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!??"

“WHY ARE THE TIRES SQUEALING?!??!!!"

“YOU’RE GOING TO GET A TICKET!!!!!"

“AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!"

If you can afford it and you really want it I say go for it.

There’s something to be said for saving money and future planning.

But then there’s also something to be said for creating memories and fun.

If I had the money I’d probably have something similar. Why the hell not get some real enjoyment on my commute to work.

I told my wife, in these exact words...

“You are uninvited from riding in this car."

" Ever again."

“We’ll both be happier."

Looking to lose weight or build up those leg muscles? if so get the Ford. Those cars always seem to help you walk more.
Or he could buy a Camaro,
...that you can’t see out of.

insurance would talk me out of it... jus' sayin'!
I've owned 2 Mustang GTs in the past .The last one a 2004 that I got rid of in2013,and my insurance wasn't that much more than the other cars I've owned. This will depend on driving record, age of drivers ,mileage you drive it per year etc.But everything has gone up in the past couple years ,so the easiest thing to do if this may be a problem is get a quote from the insurance company before you buy. My last one was my daily driver that I commuted to work in Charlotte with everyday.

Why do so many people say things like "talk me out of..."?

NO!

I say if you want something, it's in your budget, and it ain't gonna hurt the family financially, go for it!

Another viewpoint - if family obligations i.e. moving kids and their sports gear around makes the Mustang questionable consider a high power SUV.

Ok, might sound crazy but price and performance of a Mustang vs 6.0 Suburban or Hemi Cherokee in most real world scenarios is about the same. Except the Suburban will haul ass down the highway with the entire family and all their stuff on the way to the beach.

Just my viewpoint and preference
