So I have a penchant for old Eastern Bloc stuff, and a VZ 58 has been on my want list for awhile. I know there's basically two options, Century and Czechpoint. Does anyone here own either? The more commonly available rifles seem to be Century units, and while it would be nice for it to be a good shooter and reliable, it's not a "trust my life to" gun so I'm willing to accept some measure of inconsistency and weirdness.

I guess the main question is if I want a VZ 58, is a Century gun "good enough" or is hunting down a Czechpoint really worth the extra time and expense?

Here was my experience with the CSA model:

I had one years ago that was much better and functioned flawlessly. Can't say that production has overall gotten worse, but if a company puts out a lemon, I'll find it.

I had a couple of the Century rifles as well. They both functioned fine. I think the main difference between the two is really the barrel- the CSA model will be more accurate and the barrel will last longer, and the trigger gremlin- you may or may not have problems with a Century trigger.

Aside from that, no rail for optic mount on the Century, and the finish is more like a park than paint. The muzzle device is also 14x1 standard AK whereas the CSA is the correct Czech thread pattern. Some other small differences here and there, but those are the main concerns.
Sounds frustrating. Wanna sell it? :p

I've had a 2008 for several years and never ran into a problem. Lucked out with a non-trigger gremlin model that plagued many others. It has been great and is among my more accurate x39 guns even with the Century barrel, though admittedly these days it doesn't see as much use as it probably deserves.

If you're looking for a shooter I'd recommend a 2008 on the secondhand market. Cheaper, and looks/feels/works just like the "real" thing. Just in case you don't already know (and some don't), these take proprietary mags. The receiver edges are quite sharp - the rear lower left corner has actually broken the skin on my grip hand, on the web between my thumb and index finger, while shooting. Also, I loathe the side folder, but thankfully a fixed stock is comfy and an easy swap.

Long story short, it's a solid shooter with a neat service history, and offers a different shooting experience than the AK patterned guns it is often mistaken for. If you can find one and afford it, I say get it!

Sweet. Yeah, I'm not much for a safe queen. If I'm gonna own something, it's gonna get used. Same with my bikes. I've had a couple classics that were just too nice to ride, so instead of hoard them like a motorcycle dragon, I sold them and bought rider-quality examples that I don't feel bad about putting miles and dirt on.

Snagged a VZ2008 the other day off of Armslist. Came with the folding stock, the beaver barf stock, and a bayonet. I dumped a couple hundred rounds through it over the weekend and it ran flawlessly. Pics to come.
I had a VZ2008 as well. I'm pretty sure mine was about as overgassed as they get. Similar recoil to a 30-30 and the slant brake made the paratrooper stock absolutely wrecks my cheek. I passed it on.
