Teen daughters.. remind them not to drive back home on a flat…

Hit with a sledgehammer, my wife did the same thing and bent the wheel. I patched the tire, hit the wheel with a hammer till it had a nice arc again. 👍

We went through this a couple years ago with my oldest daughter. She also drove home on a flat when she was 16. Unfortunately, it was completely flat for awhile and she shreaded the tire and drove on the rim a good distance. Tire was flopping around and knocked a piece of fender liner out also. She had to drive on a donut a few days until I could find a salvage yard rim that matched. Of course it was also a Subaru AWD so I ended up replacing all the tires since all the rest were around 50%.

That's more than enough stupid to make me angry

Put a can of the tire filler in the car. Takes a minute to use and can save your ass alot. The new stuff is even tire sensor safe. Plus people with no skills can now get home safe.
And the guy you pay to change your tires will spit in your food for doing that

When changing a tire is an unusual skill i fear for the genral public

Very true. But a daughter or wife stuck somewhere is far worse then a angry tire Jockey. Plus the new stuff doesn't do the damage like the old stuff. I have used it plenty in the last few years with no problems from me or the mechanic. Also 90% of my route is highway and a quick can is better then a slow change of tire with crazy drivers flying past you

I don't think I've ever been served food by the guys who change my tires so I'll chance it with the girls. All of the girls have a can now but also know how to change a flat. My son and I have plug kits and compressors in our trucks.

@SINNER my son bent the crap out of his beemer rim. These guys got it fixed up quick for what I thought was quite a fair price... and you know how cheap I am

Another thing … teach you kids, not just daughters, to check tire pressures when they fill up with gas … including the spare (if you newer car even has one WTH???) or changing the tire may not be an option.

GEICO to the rescue every time! Our daughter texted me from WCU that she had a flat and wanted to know what to do....first I reminded her I showed her how to change a tire....then reminded her plenty of boys in her apartment complex she asked what if I just drive it? Explained she could if she wanted to buy a $200 tire and a 3-$400 wheel....I called GEICO they sent out a guy to swap the spare for her.

Discount tire will repair any flat tire at no charge, even if you did not buy it there.

Unless you have a $300 wheel better off getting a used one from LKQ in Durham pick your parts yard.
I have one of these in each car for my wife and two daughters. My car has a battery box with compressor in it.
This model has a power cord that plugs into the 12V accessory ports or you can use the Ridgid 18V battery.
Digital set to the pressure you want and with car running inflates the tire quickly up to 150PSI.

I have them walk the car when they fill up with gas, look at the tires and don't trust the TPS sensors, check the pressure.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Be thankful it's just a tire!

My oldest did a cross country drive this summer, from one end of Route 66 and back, then back home to SC.

On the way back, she stopped at my sister's for a weekend and my brother-in-law checked her tires and oil before she left there.

He had to add 3 1/2 quarts of oil.

And, it’s not only girls. Have met several young men in their mid to late 20’s who can’t drive a manual.
Let me repeat: CAN NOT DRIVE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION.
I slipped and asked one “do you have two moms”?

My wife is the exception to the rule, and drives only manuals. We had to order her 4 door Accord as to absolutely no ones surprise, they didn't have one on the lot (this was back in the early 2000's sometime). The dealership was begging her to take one of the MANY new auto trans 4 Dr Accords on the lot but, nope nope nope.....

She's rocking a 6 speed GTI now... :)

Note to self for the day my little one(s) drive: make them change a tire, do an oil change, and wash the car so that they know the do’s and don’ts.

Daddy's Little Troublemaker used to help me work on the vehicles.

My wife and I swear that girl should have been born blonde. She's smart...but boy she sure doesn't have it all together sometimes.

I look at this a little differently. I'd rather wife/daughter drive on a flat, and maybe ruin a replaceable rim and tire, versus getting stuck on the side of a road or in some random parking lot. There is a lot of f'ed up people out there and I would rather replace a tire/rim than have harm come to my wife or daughter. Just my 2 cents.

These days that advice would apply to boys as well as girls. Gone are the days when most boys worked on mechanical stuff.

Driving on a flat is also the sort of thing i could see my wife doing. It's a mentality: it's dangerous out here so i need to drive home to where it's safe first.

My wife can drive a manual and wanted one for her next car. We recently got her a CX-5 but all inventory was automatic and it would have had to be special order.

I have a WRX on order, due in next month, that is manual. I asked my coworkers, mostly female, if they can drive a manual. One says yes and they prefer it. One said they could, but their husband can't. One said they could but it had been a long time. She is foreign born and manual cars are normal in her home county. One, a millennial, just flat out said no.

years and years ago I taught all of my females how to change a tire on a car. That might be the Wife, Kids or Grandkids, when they bought a different car I made sure they could change a tire by themselves. Then I gave them all the same advice, "You call me if you have a flat, call before you attempt a repair" I dont care what time it is, I will come and get you. If you are to far away, I will send someone to take care of it for you,and just stay locked in a store or in the car. The Sons or Grandsons, taught them the same and then told them, " Dont call me if you have a flat, figure it out for yourself " I taught them how to change a tire, told them to make sure the spare was filled with air. The boys are on their own, as it should be.

My former boss’s daughter was off at college and her oil light came on. Her brilliant boyfriend checked the oil and it was low. Being a hero, he went into a convenience store, bought and added 2 quarts. Of transmission fluid! She drove the smoking and stinking Honda Accord home over 100 miles like that! Amazingly my boss took it and had the oil and filter changed and the car lasted her a couple more years. Smoked a little and burnt oil til he sold it, but got her through college.

My sister had the oil light come on. She kept driving. Totally destroyed a Ford 302 motor. Mom and dad were on vacation. I used the family car to push her car home. When dad got home he got the car started but it was so bad you could tell it was blown and I said so. Dad had to agree and he went about working to get sis a motor to put back in that car.

A girl i was in a lab with - her dad never taught her anything about cars, but always took care of things without telling her. Well, when she moved away from home, she had no idea about basic stuff, like checking and changing oil. so she didn't. you can guess how that turned out (poorly). but hey, he bought her a new car...

That girl came in with no common sense when it came to anything electrical or mechanical. but she very much earned a phd doing electrophysiology on fresh mouse and rat brain slices. I'd see her crawling around on the lab floor rewiring things like a pro, but then i'd see her doing things like awkwardly kicking a full oxygen cylinder across the lab with open flames - without the safety cap on I'd run over and intervene so we didn't all die.
"how can be this smart, and still be dumb?"
"MY DAD NEVER TAUGHT ME THINGS!"
