The "Fire-Bowl" thread

Those with the large would you recommend a medium for a general family hang around the fire time?

I have a medium. It’s perfect for social gatherings up to 6 or 7 adults when it’s cold and everyone needs to be closer to the fire. In warmer temps you can expand that up quite a bit more. Currently I haven’t used mine for cooking, but I will in the future. So my best guess would be that it will handle cooking up to 4-6 with no issues. Depending on what you are cooking.

I gave my medium to a friend and picked up a large when @LeeMajors picked up the last load. Medium works fine for a fire but it’s pretty shallow. I definitely prefer the large especially for cooking. It‘s also at least twice the weight so once you get some nice coals in there it really radiates some heat off the bowl. Probably the biggest drawback for me with the large is the height. If you have low chairs like adirondacks, it’s hard for me to see over the bowl if people are sitting across from me.

Been seeing some of those lately.

What is the ring around the bottom for? Kinda looks like tube towards the bottom of the legs?
Foot rest

Is there an outdoor burn ban in effect? Was told there was but I can't find anything.

Probably BS from someone who doesn't have a fire pit/bowl...

I’ve had something flash up on my phone the past week or so. It is usually just warning against burning since it’s been windy lately.

I’m debating on getting one of these. How hot does the bowl get? Mainly wondering because of littles. We watch our girls like a hawk when we have a fire but wondering in case they bump into accidentally. I’m between a fire bowl or building one out of our leftover brick from our house. I’d really like to find an old/damaged tractor wheel with the center out of it.

Hope not, got the burn barrel going too

Mine will turn cherry red hot. Even when it's not red it's still HOT

You def want to keep them away at a little distance as mentioned above they get very hot and would not be good if someone touched it. Also stay hot for a good while as well.

In need of a new fire pit. Any place to get a fire bowl around Clayton/RDU?

It’ll melt the bottom of your shoes boots when it has a nice bed of coals in it

Glued one of these things together last week and ran the initial burn in. Wish I would have made one years ago, far better than a burn barrel.

Couple of questions for y’all.
What kind of paint are y’all using to paint them?

Do any of y’all make your own charcoal with these? I canned up the coals from the burn in, while I won’t cook with that run it seems to have worked extremely well. I’ll get a pic tomorrow of the coal.

My wife wanted to have a fire Wednesday evening since it was nice and cool out. We and the kids had good time. Roasted a few marshmallows.

Nice looking bowl there sir. I'm convinced you'll enjoy it.

About every 4-6 months I spray ours with Super High Temp spray paint that I got at Tractor Supply. As mentioned above, it's sacrificial. There ain't no paint that can last with that heat that I know of.

That’s what I figured, didn’t know if y’all had found some high speed paint that held up. She’s bare steel since that initial burn.
It’ll rust in short order and look like the rest of ours after we tried to paint them and it promptly fell off

If I happen to leave the ashes in it and they get rained on it will rust and form a scale that flakes off. I figured that wouldn't be good long term. So I drilled some holes in the bottom for drainage and I put a grill cover over it when not in use. It's rusty but stable. 10+ years in and it's not showing any signs of abuse.

Mr. Thurman has two large, several medium and several small bowls right now if anyone is looking. I called him today about lunch and @Lil D and I made a quick down and back trip this afternoon after I got off work to get one.

Wonder if he has any cooking grates?

We talked about that after leaving. I didn’t think to ask. His number is in the original post. Give him a call. Super nice man

If anyone is picking one up and heading North (RDU area) and has room for a medium, I’ll gladly pitch in for gas and time

Well, crap. Just realized he is in Sanford. Don’t have a way of transporting it myself, so the offer still stands

I picked up 3 firebowls from Mr. Thurman yesterday. After I left, he had some mediums and couple smalls left. He said that he has materials to make more of all sizes when he can get around to them.
