The Ice Storm....

For anyone who needs me to text or email pics of me enjoying power over the next couple days let me know. I'll send photos of steaming coffee or bathwater, or eggs and bacon frying on the stove, TV playing some chick flick. All for you to convince your spouses with.

My rates are reasonable for this service lol.

pshaw. I emailed a college friend who lives in Austin to check on how he was doing vis-a-vis the TX problems: come to find out that he's on a "workation" in Aruba.

Although I did learn a new vocabulary word, I still wished the curse of a thousand crabs upon him.

The way things stand right now my office will not open in Raleigh tomorrow. We have propane heat and a propane grill to cook with with plenty of water on hand. I will need the propane topped off next week but can adapt to 20lb tanks if needed.

That works for the 12 guys that actually lose power for any length of time. If we actually lose it for a day or two that would be great so I have an excuse to use some crap and rotate inventory.

What you talkin about willis?
There's dozens of them on this forum and they'll tell you what to do for free.
That wasn’t a complaint. Just an observation. And if somebody is going to burn down one of my properties, I’d prefer it not be me, or the electrician formerly known as gunbelt

Lmao. We have friends that live 5 minutes away. We usually have our power restored in hours and it’s days for them. They know they are welcome here any time. So during power outages I send them pictures of me running three appliances at once to burn off some extra power.

I was waiting on parts for a generator install the last two weeks. The unit and panel is wired. Gas piping is not. They are going to be pissed if their power goes out. This county sucks to get parts. Plus I am not working in the freaking rain every day.

As for me I am doing nothing in preparations for tomorrow. Generator has been in unopened box 6 years. I’ll deal with it when something happens.

3 Adult toys don‘t count. They don’t use much power. You aren‘t imoressing

Hit the Adult Bottled Candy store Tuesday, no line, filled the gas cans this morning when they sent me home from work for a few hours, no line. Generator, woodstove, propane, nonperishable food things, check. Wife and kid should be able to manage relative comfort while I'm working. Expect little to nothing to actually happen.

I’m doing paperwork late and no sleet at 1:10am. I’m in Hickory area and it was predicted to start at 7:00pm last night. Hope they got it wrong.

I have a 12kw dual fuel Duromax. It will very nearly do the whole house. On generator, I heat with gas logs and I shut off the hot tub. I also toggle well pump and water heater so they are not on at the same time. Otherwise it is life as usual.
Plumbed it to the LP tank. It has never seen gasoline.
That is the same gen that I have. And same procces .
Mine will trip if I forget to turn off the well or the water heater.

It has begun.
Well, rain, anyway.
But it's quite cold, real feel is 21 here.

Rain, lightning, thunder.

Perfect driving to work weather.

All of ya that are planning to buy a generator soon, this could be a great deal.
Very low hours and regularly maintained.

Good Luck to everyone in the path.

Wood fireplace, pile of dry oak, honda EU2000i, coleman stove and candles for stay home from work, you took care of us sexy time. All set.

The Genny is for coffee and microwave.
It's a good system for short term.
Cheap, & easy to maintain.

40kw? That's enough for you and and a couple of your closest friends. ;)

32°F and ran in the containment area. Not sure what time it started here but it just looks wet outside, no ice that I can see. Work decided we'd be closed last night but I planned to wfh anyway.

Absolutely!
I have a 36kw at home. My house and my rental nextdoor are wired for full power!
A/C after a hurricane is not a Luxury!

I recently set a 125kw at a (non-primary) residence on Figure 8 Island... That seems like overkill.

Looked outside, lots of icicles forming all over the banisters outside etc
Feels odd being home at 7am on a Thursday
Ive got to get out of here soon.
Or try, at least.

I just brought the dog in from her walk and it's 33 with a wet cold rain nothing else right now. I did come down pretty good last night.

There is just a light glaze here on the VA border in Granville. Still light drizzle but 29 and what hits the ice tends to freeze quickly. We were without power for 31 hours last weekend but the 5500 KW generator kept everything in the house I wanted running the whole time.

Frozen pipes. When we bought our house here in NC, I was surprised to see it has water pipes that are run inside outside walls of the house.

I know Southerners don’t like when Yanks say “that’s not the way we do it back home”, but I’ve never owned a house before that had pipes run in exterior walls. Seems like it’s just asking for trouble when the temperature drops.

Another thing I find curious.... why do folks get so panicky about losing heat for a day or two? Sure, it might get uncomfortable, but just put on a coat. It doesn’t get windy or rainy or snowy inside, it just gets cold. Worst case, inside temp = outside temp. If you can dress to go outside in 10*, you can dress to stay inside in 10*.

Aside from frozen pipes, there is only discomfort, but no danger.

Of course it’s different for people with special health concerns, but overall, it’s just a couple days of being cold. What’s the big deal?
Ten days without power/ heat one time with small kids, and old in-laws around the corner with no power. Got down to 40 in the house.

And we don’t care how y’all did it up north.

So far here just cold and rain. No ice yet on the porch rails and I don't see any accumulation in the trees. Temps are right at 32 though so that could change.

Why is it that the yankees flock here like a bunch of freaking geese?

I told the wife that I will be making the case again for a whole house generator, that is, when there is inventory of generators again after the flood of orders if this ice really materializes anywhere in the southeast. She vetoed it two years ago. Who knows why. I had the quotes, perfunctory approval from the HOA, the whole shebang, and yet 10 days without power during a hot September when she was preggers a lifetime ago, and 10 days without heat when the boys were little, and it’s like she has amnesia.

We are going to be grandparents in a month, Lord willing, and the grown kids don’t live far from us. I’d like for there to be one place with heat in winter and a/c in summer if we are without again. Including the fact that I’m no longer a spring chicken and don’t care to deal with all the makeshift preps and stress when the power goes out at 2AM.

Torrents of rain all morning in Burke County, but haven't seen a single icicle yet. Schools are closed but still seeing frequent traffic on the highway.
