About two weeks ago I talked myself into getting a .22 caliber AR type semiautomatic. My local range/gun shop had the model I wanted, so I took the plunge.
I'm not going to change too much, the A2 grip was replaced with a Magpul MOE, going with an MFT minimalist stock, Magpul BUIS to be replaced by Troy BUIS, and A1 bird cage to be replaced by an as yet unknown muzzle device. Been looking at BCM and Smith Enterprise Vortex.

My optic might surprise some of you, but I've been giving the Sig 1-4X24 SFP some serious thought, but a Meprolight M21 might be even better.
I’d be tempted to throw an inexpensive Primary Arms red dot on it. All depends on philosophy of use. I’ve seen some dudes set up their 15-22 to mirror their primary AR as much as possible to use for training

We have one , my daughter has shot thousands of rounds. Ours was a little picky with some types of ammo - after research on some rimfire specific pages - I changed the extractor , extractor spring & plunger. Now 99.8% reliable with any ammo including bucket o bullets from Remington.

Can’t really beat them. They’re cheap, reliable, feel exactly like an AR (minus weight), mags are great, and they’re a lot of fun!
Mod it to your heart’s desire, just like any AR.

I moved from the SW to CMMG’S just for the weight being closer to the standard and also have the option of 5.56 and 300BO.

But as has been said they are great and run great.

You can fill the grip and buffer tube with coins, lead shot, fishing weights, etc…to get a little more weight.

I did that at first until I realized I didn’t care. Especially since the barrel on mine is only 4.5”.

That's certainly what I do with mine. My 15-22p is configured similarly to my 300blk short AR, while my 15-22 rifle is configured to match my 5.56 match rifle. Only real difference is the 300blk uses an Aimpoint T2 Micro while the 15-22p has a Sig Romeo 5, and the 5.56 has a Nightforce NX8 1-8 whereas the 15-22 rifle has an Athlon 1-4. Purely as a matter of cost savings - the principle is the same for each.

I wouldn't waste time with muzzle device, unless it's a suppressor mount for a can you have.
I've been able to attain zero performance difference with .22 rifles and muzzle devices. Just my opinion.

Would love to have one of these with a 1-4, as I like those on my 5.56. and it would be nice to practice with. I like these guns a lot. They just seem to work.

I agree. I changed out the MDs on my two 15-22s and found them to do basically nothing. Yes, even firing quickly. Unless it's to put a suppressor on them, the A2 FHs are perfectly cromulent and aren't worth changing out.

I used to take some boys that were in my son’s scout troop shooting. I’d put all kinds of stuff on the table for them to shoot. The 15-22 was the one that was passed from one boy to another and never lay on the table for long.

These things are great beginners. Every newbie that's shot mine loved it and makes transitioning to 'real' black rifles easy. It's so much easier and more comfortable to drop this at them for a day rather than plop an AR15 on them first thing.
And mine is a regular at the range. It passes the fun test for even the jaded shooters.

I've been wanting one of these. Are there models to avoid, or are they pretty much all the same?

The one that USMC6094 shows up top is the 2nd version, and I think a bit more sleek than version 1.
V1 is overall the same but has a quad rail fore end.
That's really the biggest difference I believe. Other than that they're all pretty much the same and none to avoid function-wise.
Red dots work real well on these things and you can customize them easily.

This, and some of the older ones had some issue with the bolt. S&W was sending out a special gage to test it. Not sure if this is still the case. Here is the link with the info.

I think there are also some non-threaded variants, which you ought to avoid unless you’re gonna SBR it anyway.

From purely aesthetic standpoint, the FDE or Kryptic Cammo is an awesome looking rifle. The assault rifle for squirrels.

Someone on here, at some point in the past, showed us a pic of his, pistol model, with a suppressor and a fixed stock--two tax stamps--that was pretty awesome. I'd love to see that one again.

How do they shoulder it? 🤔

Don’t know if it was mine, but I’ve posted a bunch of pics through the years. I’ve had the rifle since 2013, and it’s been in SBR config since May ‘14. I think I picked up the pistol early ‘21?

The SBR has a 4.5” barrel. Factory quadrail (it’s actually a pink muddy girl rail I bought used and spray painted after I shortened it…which is why you’ll see a little pink in some pics where the black paint rubbed off) and a 1.25”x6.5” silencer tucked deep inside. In one pic, the silencer ends where my thumb is to give you an idea. This firearm consistently reduces adult men to giggling little school girls when they shoot it. 🤣🤣

The pistol barrel had ~1/2” cut off of it. I had to have it altered for a relief cut anyway, so I went ahead and had it shortened just enough that there’s no gap between the rail and silencer. The can is a 4”x1.5” DIY job. You can see the joint where the tube and end cap meet, and the end cap is probably only ~1/8” thick…so it’s barely inside.

Took new pics today only because I’ve swapped optics since the last pics. One pic shows you how close they are in OAL with stock and brace fully extended. I have to shoot subsonic in the pistol to stay quiet, but the 4.5” barrel in the SBR keeps bulk pack quiet.

I ambled into my favorite gun store/boot/charhart/animal trap/fishing/fertilizer and feed place where a fella can get a cooked to order sammich today. I ordered my sammich and during my wait I found a coon trap I’d been wanting and a 15/22 pistol at a deep discount…and so I began the paperwork and it’s home now. Cuddling with all the other goodies in the safe.

I can’t wait to build it out a bit and thread a can on it!

I’m assuming the newer pistol? I’m still hoping to find the older style (no fake buffer tube).

Yeah, newer one w fake tube.

I’m on the hunt for the older style as well and if I find it, I’ll have two.

I purchased my rifle shortly after Sandy Hook, did not want to drop money on the 5.56 and not like it. Right out if the box accurate and I was hooked.
Got my M&P 15X ordered after I got an in stock alert on the phone during lunch. I shoot them suppressed too.

Well, I decided on a Smith Enterprise Vortex and a B5 SOPMOD stock.
FEDEX is playing musical delivery, as of the radio show this evening, they should be here tomorrow, but we'll see.
Sights are now Troy too, fixed HK front, and folding rear.
Pistol grip is a MAGPUL MOE now.
Also think a new aluminum charging handle is order......

Pictures or it didn’t happen! Well I guess it did happen but we want pictures lol.

Tomorrow, or sometime this weekend, still kinda miffed at Brownells and FEDEX. More at FEDEX than Brownells though.....
I feel your pain brother.

Have you used the Meprolight? If so is it any good? It looks like a novelty, but I'm really intrigued by it.

Yep, i have two M21s, one on a cantilever carry handle mount, and the other on an A4 upper.

I unapologetically recommend them, they are BOMB PROOF, and made for stacking bodies.

Would you prefer it to an Eotech?

Now I can say that I've had two issues with FEDEX.
First delivery notice was for Wednesday, second, "corrected" notice was for today. At last check, my Brownells package left Columbus Ohio at 815 this morning, with NO delivery date attached......

Would this happen to be that place near Burnsville?

I absolutely love mine. ….

Man,you ain’t just whistlin’ Dixie!

I bought my first 15-22 quite happenstance off a bud who was thinning his herd … I went over to buy a shotgun off him, spied the FDE 15-22 in the corner and …

I think we are up to SEVEN (7!) in the household, the latest being a Highlander Kryptek I waited quite awhile to come back in stock!

FUN!

waiting for my 9" cmmg barrel/bolt to get in. I've been looking for a good deal on the S&W, but i just haven't found one, especially since the pistol versions are apparently ultra rare
so yeah, i'll use some parts that i have laying around to build a suppressed pistol.

the shipping door at work broke in the open position the other day and the repair guys plugged the whole with 2 sheets of plywood they weren't taking back. Well, me and one of the women both put claims on the plywood and 2x4s. so we're splitting the stuff. and i'm building a pair of V-tac 9 hole barricades with mine.

So yeah, i'm gonna be slinging buckets of 22lr out of an ar at steel targets from behind a training wall, and i am SO glad to be out of detroit.

Yessir!

Off future 26 headed to Burnsville on the left at what might the the first traffic light.

Prices Creek General Store
That is the most incredible place I've ever patronized😍

I am so happy I have to make it an event to go that way🤣 Found it when we were building a new forest service maintenance shop near mars hill several years ago.

That place is SO awesome. From breakfast to H&H double rifles. They have it. Good people run it and the prices are fair.

I'd never have a dollar to my name if they were in my area.
