Heard them talking about this on the radio this morning. A study was done and a paper written with lots of psychological mumbo jumbo. The gist of which was that whatever song was number one for the year you turned 14 would have most affected how you see the world.

Something to do with that age and the formation of our brains being the most formative year. The song that was number one for that year would have had the most airtime and therefor would have implanted its lyrics in you as you were just really forming your views of the world.

I turned 14 in 1987 so mine is living on a prayer by Bon Jovi and I can honestly say that's pretty accurate, for me at least. The whole idea of take my hand, as long as we have each other nothing else matters has always been pretty pervasive in how I view relationships.

For 1980 Billboard shows Olivia Newton John's 'Physical' to be #1  'Flashdance' to be #6- that's OK because she really reminded me me of my wife. The rest are awful pop.
Tunecaster has a much better list: #1- Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick in the Wall', #7- Billy Joel's 'It's Still Rock And Roll To Me', #8- AC/DC's 'Back In Black', #16 I sang to my now wife Seger's 'Her Strut', along with #'s 9,10,11, 12,13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 21

Yeah I used Tunecaster's list too.

I didn't like the Tunecaster list, lol. Andy Gibb wasn't a part of my listening habit.

That is a pretty effing epic list right there. Damn!

I turned 14 in 1985. According to the tunecaster chart, it was dire straights, money for nothing. I remember working that summer and saving up about $1000. My parents threw in some more and I bought a Kenwood 55B rack system. At the store they put this new thing called a CD in there and turned it up to demo the unit. The song: Miney fir Nothing.

Are we using the year overall or the week we turned 14. Also which chart.?

Also the real question is at 14 did you see the Bon Jovi Slippery When Wet Tour?

That song was on the Slippery When Wet album. That was the first album, actual vinyl record album I ever bought. Before that, I wore out Dad's Black Sabboth, Paranoid album.
In '93, the top song was Whitney Houstons, I'll always love you. Meh, can't really draw any parallels to my life but she did have a good voice. The song I remeber most from the charts that year was Enformer.

OK here are 4 picks from the Billboard top 100 that probably would define it for me (1988)

The Flame by Cheap Trick
Sweet Child O' Mine by GNR
Bad Medicine by Bon Jovi

and.....#1 song of 1988

Faith by George Michael

lmao

I prefer the Limp Biskit version myself ;)

I got ... "Whitney Houston: How will I know?"

WTF... so that's why my life has been so surreal... guess I better hook up with a Hip-Hop star, smoke some crack and take an ambien before I get in the tub.

That song was on the Slippery When Wet album.
I recall when that came out. I bought a copy of it (on cassette) before it became popular. By the time everybody was playing it, over, and over, and over, I had grown so sick of it, I don't think I ever played it again.

I was 14 in 1978. I pretty much only listened to country stations/songs back then too.

First top country song that year? "Take This Job and Shove It" by Johnny Paycheck :D

Finished up the year with "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers.

I don't know. I had a lot of 45 RPM records back then, and few albums, because I liked individual songs and not the entirety of the album. And yes, I had those two songs...

1997 Was not a good year for music. At the the time, I was pretty much just listening to 80's Metallica albums on repeat.

I saw them on that tour at the Capital Center in Landover MD in April of 1987. It was a awesome show.

Looking back 1987 was not a bad year for music. I would say these are my favorite and most memorable songs from that year. I am not sure they did a lot to define me but I enjoyed them at the time.

January 3 Walk Like An Egyptian The Bangles*
February 14 Livin' On A Prayer Bon Jovi
May 16 With or Without You U2
August 8 I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For U2
October 10 Here I Go Again Whitesnake

*Only on the list because I had a thing for Susanna Hoffs.

Some people were taking on the radio about the song that was number one on your bday But I looked that up and didn’t recognize the song. Found it and played it an still don’t know it so I looked at the year and that makes more sense anyway.

Doesn’t matter what chart IMO.

and no I didn’t. Never been a big concert goer and even if I was my parents would have never let me go to a concert at that age.

Dang it! In this thread I see that a majority of you are the same ages as my children.

I feel so old now.

Was the number one song at 14 something about a polka dot bikini, or something by Glenn Miller? Lmao.

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones

Billboards top 1977 were

"Tonight's the Night (Gonna Be Alright)" Rod Stewart
2 "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" Andy Gibb
3 "Best of My Love" The Emotions
4 "Evergreen (Love Theme from A Star Is Born)" Barbra Streisand
5 "Angel in Your Arms" Hot
6 "I Like Dreamin'" Kenny Nolan
7 "Don't Leave Me This Way" Thelma Houston
8 "(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher" Rita Coolidge
9 "Undercover Angel" Alan O'Day

"Call Me" by Blondie (1980). I can't lend any validity to this study though because I know I was not regularly listening to the radio at that age. That didn't happen until I got a car.
